Disco 2 Variable Vain Turbo anyone?

Thanks SF. I am going to get it all checked over by someone who knows what they are doing. asap.
If you mean the red plug on the ECU, yep. There was oil too, not masses, but enough. I have a new injector harness ready to be fitted when I can get the damn thing into the garage.

Had a reply from Empire Tuning. They sound good. He said he would prefer to have me with vehicle to remap while driving, but can do by post if necessary. How much of a difference would this make? I really can't get the vehicle to them easily, it would cost a fortune and a day or two away. If it will make a huge difference I could look into it though and plan it for when i have time and cash for the monster fuel bill, especially at 22mpg :D

Trust me. Itll be huge difference!

Are you saying Empire will make huge difference? Do you mean if I go, or if I send ECU? How big is the difference between the two options? thanks

I insist that a remap would make a noticeable difference on e prefectly maintained and well running engine, if your's has some issues no remap will cure that eventually it will kill it for good so better ''tune" up the engine first with new turbo hoses, chek if the cartridge is not worn, wastegate working well, injectors well balanced and not clogged, fuel pressure OK, bypass the EGR if it's still on, de-CAT if if it's Eu3, clean the intercooler, and so on ...i mean restore it as to run almost like when it left factory then remap it not before

Regarding remaps - As sierra mentioned, I am not going to proceed with any other maps until the whole engine/MAF etc has been checked over. I may try to get decat and de-EGR done (i don't really understand what these phrases mean :D) first as well. After that I will see where to go.

Important question - if anyone knows of a regular LandyZoner with Disco2 in lower part of Cornwall, let me know the username please. I would love to have someone else drive mine for a second opinion so if anyone was near me and fancied a costa meet up for a bite and coffee on me plus a second opinion on performance, that would be good!

SF - you mentioned oil on the red plug. I am yet to have new injector harness fitted. Is it possible that could cause problems like bad fuel economy/bad map? Its dead below 1600 revs but I have to say it goes much nicer beyond that, when it eventually spins up and kicks in.

Oil acts as isolator on all the involved connector's pins(red plug and injector harness plugs and it can develop a huge variety of symptoms, you'll know only after you replaced it... then clean the plugs with contact spray once a week untill all the residual oil leaves the engine harness... be aware that only genuine LR loom is reliable, aftermarkets have weak contacts and they can leak again in no time

I don't know but only those who tried others can see the difference, here's a ''flavour'' from other forum

Just to put a bit a slant on this, i had Mike from dynachip remap my auto when i got it as it was gutless and the gearbox was horrid, it seemed to rev out, and slip. I had the box serviced by my local indie and was told “they all do that sir” after doing some research i decided to try a different mapper to see if it could be sorted that way. I choose Gareth from empire tuning and after some discussions with him I sent him my ecu. Couple days later and it was back and fitted. All I can say is WOW! Difference was amazing, there is no turbo lag power comes in as soon as you touch the pedal and just keeps coming and the best bit (and my point in this) is the gearbox is completely different, no flaring, no overeving, no slipping.
I was considering an HD tc until I had this new map, im not now!"

Odd about the auto box as mine has always seemed too revvy despite any map on it.

John, have a look on Facebook for "Cornwall and Devon Landrover Club" & post your question for someone with a D2 to drive yours. There are lots of helpful guys down there!

Thanks Paul, that would be great. Unfortunately I don't (and won't) have a Facebook account. But I may manage to find someone on there via a friend, that would be great just for a second opinion.

Understand about Facebook - lol.
If you can contact them via other means, great, they may be able to help with another opinion.
I'm sure many of them have TD5 D2s - they're often used as tow cars for their competition land rovers

One thing you may be able to do, if they are feeling generous, is to borrow a standard ECM and fit it to your car, you'll need to know the injector codes, and it is a tiny bit of a performance. But at least with that you'll know how it drives as standard and maybe be able to make informed decisions.

The problem with any non vgt diesel is, it will be as flat as a wicthes tit power wise until the turbo starts to make boost, even vgt does not eliminate this totally.
You cna get more power off boost, but that normally ends up with a smokey exhaust, especially as the nights close in and you can see the smoke in the following cars headlamps.
