Valve Timimg

Hi chaps

Can anyone tell me what the valve timing is for a 19j, 2.5TD land rover engine, ie what degrees the exhaust and inlet valves should start to open on the firing stroke ?

Just a clarification on valve timing: it's largely defined by the cam grind (certainly the in/ex relative timing is fixed). The angle from TDC is normally quoted at max lift rather than the start of the lobe. Production engines dont generally have variable valve timing (although I've noticed my 300TDi does have a slotted cam pulley so your engine might have a similar unhelpful feature if you accidently undo the lock bolts)... but do require very accurate alignments of chain / belt marks - and for mechanical injection diesels, accurate pump timing too.

To set the valve timing acurately you'll need a 360 deg protactor bolted to the crank and a dial guage with mag base to set TDC, then find max lift on the cam. There are a couple of tricks to setting for the real top of the lobe as max lift will be sustained for several degrees... apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs with this lot but can xplain more if you need some tips.
