Not 100% sure about this.
Not ever owned a Land Rover before let alone a 300Tdi I don't know what they sound like!!
I thought I had some valves rattling so did them last six months ago.
A lot better but still sounded like one tapping away!
Finaly got around to doing them today.
Now either I'm missing one thats tricky or it's something else?????????
It sounds like a mettalic tap going roughly every half second as the engine idles
as you thottle is speeds up until it goes(or is to fast for my ear to hear it)

clearance I'm doing is 0.20mm for a 1995 Defender 110 CSW 300Tdi.

Is it just how they sound and I'm being anal or is it a concern - it has done 234K miles.

hi mate , no it shouldnt be that noticeable , the valve caps can break/wear,followers can stick in worn guide ,and also vac pump can sound exactly the same

Hiya Guys,
I put a new vacuum pump on it about 3 months ago.
Do remember when I did the crossmember and removed the tank, when starting the lift pump arm does not feel any resistance as if it don't work. the leaver has no spring action on it and will stay where you leave it.
should it be up or down and could this be the culprit !!!

Hope your okay James

Last car I owned with tappets was a a+ metro engine and I don't remember any valve caps. After some research it would appear that I need to check these.
Im sure the top of the valve stems are shiny metal and almost a ball shape?
If one of these caps are missing and I've redone the clearance will it still tap?

If valve stems are worn is it head off to replace!!!!!!!

Need infomation on all this please

Thanks

Thanks mate.
struggled to find the correct link there. I do have the workshop manuals from
www.landroverweb.org but the originals are pencil like drawings!!!!
Now I know what I'm looking for I will have to remove the rocker cover again and look!!!
Pretty sure it's not the vac pump as that was leaking oil really bad and has now been replaced with a brand new one(Although possible)

Done some more research and driven it some more and it really is getting loud and i'm worried it's gonna be something fatal!!!!
Read some where that a blowing exhaust gasket can sound the same - is this true and is there an easy way to test this???

Thanks Guys!!!

Thanks James for your help!!
Rechecked in day light and found no 4 has the top of the cap broken off and no 7 has some dents on the edge and face of it. I've left no 7 in and removed no 4. redone the clearance's. Still got a tapping now but seems quieter and faster. Maybe 4 to 6 times a second. Ordered new caps and will see what it's like once fitted. I have a sneaky suspicion that the manifold gasket may have a pin hole in as I really think the new quieter tapping is coming from that side and towards the bulkhead.
Will keep you posted.

Hello again.
New addition - Tappets - Done
Fuel Lift Pump - Done
Exhaust Manifold Gasket - Done
Vacuum Pump - Done (6 months ago)
Found a loose nut mounting for Gearbox  - DONE!!

Still tapping!!! What else could it be - Faulty vacuum pump - Head gasket - worn cams on camshaft??
Got under neath and it sound like from the top of engine.
Outside it sounds like its coming from the bulkhead end of the engine
I'm at a loss on this one!!
Oh and my rear exhaust box fell off on motorway today :eek:

James

I know I'm the only one adding to my own thread which is a bit sad but I'm happy.

I've diagnosed the tapping but not fixed it yet.
This morning when driving I lost power at top end so I was forced to deal with a leaky lift pump olive in day light.
While working away I noticed oil on the big turbo pipe at the bulkhead side of engine.
So I started it and sure enough the head gasket is letting a squirt of oil out with each stroke :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Not noticed before as I always work on it at night and had never felt low enough.
Now at 237k is this normal wear is is there something nasty that could have caused it.
Also the gasket has two notches in it. I thought that was thickness but I read some where that it indicates onl two gasket changes left.
Now I know i'm a bit thick(Thats what the wife says) but surely that can't be right!!

Mine has a very loud tapp to I just thought it had something to do with the 230,000 miles on clock lol
Perhaps I should change vac pump as the other stuff stated is new

Right - Stood outside for six and a half hours today and did my head gasket !!
Yippee!!!
Started first time once the fuel was drawn through with no probs.
All torqued and angled up exactly as the manual states.
Nice and quiet now with no tapping(YIPPEE) and revs back down nice and smooth.
Only let it idle to correct temp and for about 20mins after that.

Question is - is there a running in period for a 300Tdi head gasket??
