Help,
My V8i this mornig has decided to stall when I stop. It starts straight away when asked. I gave it a good pressure wash the day before...could this have somehow effected the engine??? Will it dry out???
Many thanks
Tony

Is this a Disco, a Rangie or what. Is it 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 or even maybe a 4.6? Is it hot wire efi or one of the other types (flapper, gems, thor) does it have a distributor? Oh and what year please?

If you gt a dizzy on it, take off dizzy cap and check for condensation, wipe inside of cap clean, small squirt of WD, clean rotor arm and re-assemble. See what happens.

Its a 1996 P reg V8i...afraid I'm abit lost on the other things you asked
Thanks
It also make a noise like a brake cable being pulled when I slow down or accellerate (Different problem) which I this might be something to with the transmission or brushes??
Any ideas

try the cleaning and drying if the dizzy first before we get to deep too quick.

You need to explain that noise better, do you mean like the ratchet on a handbrake?

Thanks for this....
What is the dizzy?. My disco has been left at work today (Weather nice and Hot), so I think any water in the engine bay should hopefully dried out? if thats what you mean??

The other noise sound like its coming from underneath and behind me and is almost like a slow loud click, which only really happens when applying a good pressure to the brake, and then the same noise whenn you acc again

could be a cv joint?? I would have said abs if it was inly under braking but accelerating too it must be something else and cv joint are known to click.

The dizzy or distributor can collect moisture in the cap very well and it doesnt seem to evapourate easily, do as kev says with it before we get more complicated and expensive things underway, as it did start after a pressure washing!

Thanks Fett I will give it a good drying in the morning and see what happens...
I will drop a post to let you know what happens..and have a look at my CV joints
Thanks again
Tony

Well left it overnight and it started first time. Once engine up to temp it started stalling (What a F^&%King nightmare trip home) Clean HT and dizzy. Had a test run and everything seems ok, bigger test run tonight (quieter roads), did seem that there was a air noise coming up from above the man engine block (where is say 3.9) is that meant to happen??

I would love to say that I have checked if the hoses are ok, but I dont reallu know what i'm looking for....I think I might have to take the hit and take it to a garage....bugger......more money......bugger

well if you can here hissing look around with it running untill you find where its coming from.

there is a hose on the back and side of the plenum (big alli bit on the top of the engine) which are quite big (20mm) and some smaller ones from the plenum again one to the dizzy and one to the plastic ball for your heater flap. I am sure I have forgotten some but that all I can think of right now.

Basicly if you find all the rubber hoses you can see and see if any have come off one end or split!

My mechanic and I had a good look round the engine bay and found nothing (Apart from what looked like steam/smoke from the dipstick!!???!!)
It work brillantly all night when I took it for a spin. Drove it this morning and it STALLED several times!!!! I'm beginining to think that some for of condenstion is building overnight somewhere causing the engine to stall in the morning and drying out through the day.

The other noise I think is the 'Trailing arm', maybe something is loose / broken??? I will investiagte further
Thanks
Tony

It might be worth your while taking off the breather on the back right rocker cover and also the flame trap on the front left rocker cover and giving them both a clean. Have you noticed any other running issues?

Does it stall only when hot? If you re-start it does it settle down and idle O.K.?

Hope that helps ya.

Fett,
Whats the stepper?
The idle after warm up is around 500rpm.
Drove the bugger from work today (1pm) and it run a good as all ways. Went to Land rover mechanic. Told him the full story, he had alook, said it sounded beautiful. He suggested it might be the idle control connect to the pelumn or may a temp control socket?? with some condnensation gotten in, hence it stalls in the mornings only. Anyway gonna try it for a couple of days (as I'm on leave) and see what happens....h

ok , the stepper is the thing on the side of the plenum its balck and looks like a giant nut.

Unplug the wires and unscrew it and clean it with carb cleaner and some in the hole too.

(this is if you have a stepper, is it a 3.9?)

it sounds as if you base idle is too low, ask kev how to set it , I am not the best at that :p

my idle was too low it stalled occasionally and we tried everything and in the end it was the tps, but they are pricey to try!

Thanks for that Fett,
I have dropped Kev an email, although i'm not sure that the base idle is wrong, because surely it would stall all day long and not just in the mornings???
Thanks again for the help

Maybe not, if fuel temp thermistor and/or coolant thermistor are not giving the right voltages the ecu will alter the injection pulse. Fuel temp thermistor is there to tell ecu if start enrichment is needed (i.e. an electronic "choke"), coolant thermistor tells ecu how hot it is so that the mixture can be adjusted according to the fuel map. Coolant thermistor is quite cheap bu tfuel thermistor is quite expensive.

Did you clean the stepper and are you sure it is working?

Did you clean the engine breathers?

To check the sensors, look in Haynes - it gives you the values you need to check with a multi-meter.

The idle speed sounds low at 500rpm; something not right there. Is the throttle set correctly?

Did you take off the dizzy cap and check its condition and that there is no condensation forming on the cap (this is now less likely but check anyway). Is your ignition timing correct?

Thanks for the quick reply. My V8i is now working like a dream. One morning it stalled only once, then the next day and it ran as good as new. I think i might have water/condensation somewhere. It now idles between 500-1000, drops a little when on gas, but otherwise it seems ok. Thanks for all your help fellas...now onto my next problem...which I think is coming from one of my trailing arms, a creeking noise when I slow down or speed up.....one thing after another........
Thanks again
Tony
