I met a chap today using waterless radiator fluid in his V8. I can’t really see the advantage is; it runs much hotter than standard (over 100 deg C apparently) and needs a special thermostat; the fluid itself is quite expensive too.

I was led to believe that if the engine runs at a higher temperature, there is more chance of the engine blowing a head gasket. I have no idea if that is true or not.

Anyone else with a V8 using this fluid?

The only advantage I can think of when using waterless coolant is that because it has a higher boiling point and it doesn't produce steam, at normal even hotter than normal temperatures the cooling system doesn't pressurise. I suppose it freezes at a lower temperature than water too.
Another disadvantage besides the cost of the stuff is that the cooling system has to be free of water, dry before it can be added.
50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze is expensive enough, thank you.

A mate of mine has used waterless coolant it in his Disco D1 300Tdi since fitting a new engine about 3 years ago, he has just put the waterless into his 2007 V8 diesel Rangie as well, he still has the standard thermostats. Waterless coolant has little less efficiency in heat transfer but not all that much, so the engines run a little warmer, the big advantage is the engine can heat up without the cooling system pressurising, much easier on the hoses and gaskets. It's expensive and you need to have no water left in the system, but I'd put it in my Disco if I had an opportunity.
