I've got a water leak from the top bleed valve of my V8. I've just driven a 300 mile round trip and it's nearly emptied the water reservoir tank. The water weeps out, hits the pulley/belt underneath it and then its sprayed over the battery box lid. The plastic bleed screw is a bit chewed up; so, is there something a little more robust on the market eg made out of brass?

If you do a search on the auction sites you'll find brass replacements, might not help you though if you've chewed up the thread in your top hose as well so check that first. Personally I ended up cutting the bleed out of the top hose and joining together with a bit of copper pipe with jubilee clips (it was an emergency repair when the bleed screw shot out and disappeared down the back of the engine). Now I just slacken a clip when I need to bleed and haven't had a problem (with that water leak) since.

I've found out that it's a pinhole in the bleed screw itself that is causing the problem!

Quick update: I couldn't buy a new bleed screw from the LR garage because it's been superseded by the type that's in the TD5 and apparently, the screw position is now on the pipework rather than on the 3 way hose connector. They would be happy to sell me the new pipe and connector for about £100 though!

I ended up buying 10 bleed screws off "the Bay" as well as the 10mm "O" rings; all for about £8, and it's not leaked since fitting the new one. The old one may have leaked because the old O ring had become flattened and it had also been disturbed after a new thermostat was fitted.
