I know everyone has their own ideas, I have a 92 disco V8i that i use for laning/pay & play days - its awsome. - but i have serious rust issues underneath (my lower rear shock mounting gave way last weekend!) so I know ill need to spend b4 the next mot April 2011.

However I have by default (non paying customer) aquired a very clean straight 93 disco TDI - never been off road & totaly 11 months mot straight......................................... but it seems so gutless compared to my V8. It seems a step down going to a tdi, i know its cheaper to run etc etc etc but just how good are they off road? I lane quite a bit & go to Yarwell & whaddon pay & plays

your views would be welcome & I guess ill get some abuse LOL

i have never gone off roading my self so i couldnt tell you whats best. but lot of the lads i know that do use tdi's. they say they are better in the deeper water of course. but deep down the all pine for the power of a good v8

Do you really need the power of a V8 off road, when green laning your only are traveling around tick-over speed and if you come to a steep hill a tdi will cope with that.
After all the Camel Trophy was completed wth Tdi engined vehicles and a bit of help from the team.:)

very true... dont underestimate the boffins at land rover to match tick over torque with gears especially when it comes to the rough stuff!

Its a no brainer if you earn about £50,000 a year get a V8, if you dont, dont buy one.
I havnt had a V8 but I used to have a 3,2 V6 Isuzu Trooper briliant motor 16 to the gallon roundtown 25 motorway when taking it easy, when some oik in a tuned up Saxo wanted a bit of fun from the lights they didnt stand a chance or going over 100mph ( on a race track of coarse );):D I bet it wasnt doing more than 10 to the gallon.

I dont earn 50,000 grand a year and I run one,

personally i prefer the tdi for low down grunt.

drove a mates v8 green laning and tho on gas, found i had to use far too many revs when negotiating steep rocky tracks.

plus diesels are better at puddle splashing.:D

I love the burble of the V8, my head says go to the TDi but my heart says V8
Think you'll find the bit thats saying V8 is a bit lower try looking down the front of yer trousers :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi and as said nbefore you dont want power when off roading its all about low down torque
