Hi all, i require some advice with regards to disco's fitted with a v8 with lpg conversion.
What does the road tax cost?
Is there any problems which occur with the engine?
What sort of fuel economy can i expect?
Any help with the above would be much appreciated :D:D:D

Hi
1, Road tax is the same weather it has lpg or not,
2, If its a good quality lpg system fitted properly there shouldnt be any problems with the engine, (but ignition system has to be kept in tip top condition)
3, Running on lpg usually drops around 2 mpg but the lpg is cheaper.

I have had 2 range rovers on lpg with no real problems due to lpg, but plenty of problems due to them being land rover:D

Squizzel..............the price of the road tax depends on the year of the vehicle and wether it is listed on the logbook as dualfuel.

If the vehicle is pre 1st march 2001-----there is no change in the road tax
If the vehicle is post 1st march 2001 ----you get a discount on the road tax if the vehicle is listed as dualfuel on the V5 registration document and it also becomes congestion charge free in London.. This is because the car is classed as a GREEN vehicle lol.

I run a 2002 4.0 v8 on lpg and get about 27mpg round town and about 34 mpg on a run....about the same as a TD5....but with a lot more get up and go

Snoops.....just make sure that if you are looking to buy a v8 with lpg, make sure it has its certificate with it and also its service history book for the lpg.

I looked at several TD5's and a hell of a lot of v8's before i found the right 1...Took me 9 months to get the RIGHT car

Hi Snoops,

I get mine serviced once a year, they check the entire system for leaks, security of fittings and replace the filters. Then they test the system and check its operation on a laptop and and check the emmissions...All for £60...A bargain in my eyes. They also stamp up my LPG service book which is always a good thing,if you ever need to make a claim on your insurance.Proves to your insurance that you lok after your car.

Thanks again for your reply WolfyDave, there's a garage up the road from me that installs lpg kits & sells fuel so i will give them a call to ask about servicing etc. Do you find that there are plenty of garages that sell lpg nowadays? Snoops

The mpg i got on the 3.9 range rover classic i had was 17mpg but the p38 4.6hse with a new engine and fast road cam fitted was just under 12mpg around town and 18mpg on a run. My last lpg car was the p38 and it was a 1996 so the tax was never altered from the norm so i stand corrected for newer vehicles. I do like the v8`s though i have had 8 rover v8 engined cars in the past but i have to say the disco td5 i have now doesnt sound as nice but isnt far behind the p38 in acceleration, and yes the p38 was running properly, but i do think the disco has been chipped.

Correct, although only only vehicles leaving the factory with an engine able to run on the two fuels are. A petrol vehicle retro converted to run on LPG is not classed a dual fuel which is a shame :)

Hi Mark.....don't worry about it mate.....The only reason i know is that i had so much aggro with DVLA with my 1995 Disco 1 when i wanted it reclassified as dualfuel, the were very shirty with me and kept telling me that it didnot need changing, but i stood my ground and stated facts listed on their own site and they eventually backed down and reclassified my car.

With regards to a list of garages that sell LPG.....Snoops , goto AUTOGAS.co.uk and you can download a list of every service station in the UK that sells Autogas. I have this list downloaded on to my SATNAV and it comes in very handy as my Disco2 only has a reserve petrol tank that holds 5 galllon and that only gives me a reserve of 75 miles MAX

Dave

If you supply DVLA with your LPG Installation certificate which must be done by a LPGA authorised installer, you can have your car reclassified as dual fuel/LPG.
I must add, that the reclassification only applies if the Vehicle WILL START UP and RUN on LPG without the need for any petrol intervention....ie--- a multi point sequencial lpg system.

I assume these figures are adjusting the actual mpg by the price ratio of LPG to petrol.

I have a 1995 3.9 V8 which gives me the equivalent of 30 mpg overall.

As has said before it is very important to keep your ignition system in top condition even to the point that the leads are routed properly and kept seperated.

Hi Alex......Yes these figures are adjusted/converted figures as if lpg was the same price as petrol....Now wouldn'y it be amazing if they were running on petrol figures. Can you imagine what we would get running on lpg lol

I have BRC kit fitted to a 2006 4.4 V8 only problem was amber light on engine management which meant either too rich or not rich enough (LPG I think has a higher octane) . Took it to A2B Pitstop in Sheffield and the guy spent a good hour on the phone with BRC regarding new software he had just received for measurement and calibrating LPG. Then we spent about a hour driving up and down a duel carriageway at a set speed making minor adjustments. And the result , well the amber light came on just once shortly afterwards, but has now stayed off for nearly a year. Would defo recommed A2B Pitstop for anyone living close to the South Yorkshire area, small back street place but he knows what he is doing. Currently get about 17mpg on long motorway runs although this is calculated by filling up but each pump is different in terms of what it can get in and is affected by ambient temp ( I think ). On board computer reckons on 21mpg! I can't tell any difference in performance on petrol or GAS. Also be wary of how much LPG cost per litre varies from 52p at Calor Gas to 68p at a BP trunk road service station. Road tax £15 discount per year, not much when paying opver £400 for year anyway!

Hi guys. Can I hijack some time on this thread. I want to get my V8 converted and intend to drive back to UK to get the job done. I have looked at sites on the web and they dont seem at all consistent. I found a company in South Wales Profess Auto gas. They say they are one of the best. Can do the job in 1 day and want 1800 pounds for the job, supply a courtesy car Etc sounds good, massive testimonials to quality of work. Tried another guy in Sussex. Wants the vehicle for 3 to 5 days and says it will cost 3 grand. I think the system they are going to fit are about the same. The one at Profess autogas seems to do everything except put the gas in for me. What should I expect to pay? The South Wales one is a bit far for me ( People travel from Scotland to see him ) If you believe the site. Anybody used one near to the Channel Ports ?
