Have the carbs been checked as the black smoke over fueling sounds like float height, float stuck or choke mechanism needs checking

Hi Fanatic, thanks for your reply

I havent had the carbs checked as yet, the problem being trust in the mechanics and the time it takes them! I guess i was asking about the EGR valve as its an easier fix which might resolve the problem (i was trying to upload a photo of the engine but the gallery wont accept the jpeg! will keep trying)

It looks like i will need to head to the cities where there are mechanics with more knowledge of landrovers!

To my knowlege there is no egr valve on any carb v8 rover there are workshop manuals that can be found for both the su or zenith carbs on line- until you check the carbs it will be a waste of time anything else.
Again the possible things are
Choke mechanism sticking, wrong float height, damaged float etc

There was air injection on some models, but this was efi from distant memory

Thanks, ill look into checking the carbs first. Lets hope the problem ends there!!:) I have the su hiff 44 so have to get the carb kit sent over first before looking into it otherwise it could be a long wait for parts to be sent internationally!

simple hassle free check that may solve your problems- get someone to work choke knob and watch the mechanism on carb, when they push choke in gently push linkage and see if it moves further.
It is possible the linkage is sticky or the springs are weak or broken
