Hello all
I'm looking for some help I recently bought a 1984 ,110 ,v8 it's done 40000 miles.every thing good on it except the seats and few cosmetic parts that I can fix for £100 .i bought it as I needed another vehicle as I had sell my last veichle to put deposit on first house so was impulse buy.stupidly I thought it would be a bit more fuel efficient :eek:but I was wrong so i need to sell and buy a diesel 110 or 90 .could you help me value it as I have searched internet ebay etc and can't find a value as the prices range so much.or another option could be swap engine for diesel but the 110 is all original and don't really want to ruin it by swapping engines but may have to if valuation is lower than what I paid, but another problem is that I never done an engine change but I leave that for another thread.
I would put some pics up but can't figure out how?
Cheers all

You thought a 3.5 V8 in a vehicle with the aero dynamics of a brick would be more fuel efficient! What were you driving before.

As for value, stick it on ebay and let the buyers decide. Set a price you are prepared to let it go for as a minimum and use that as are reserve. It's value is whatever people are prepared to pay for it.

Hah no I meant to say I was expecting the v8 would be more fuel efficient than it is .i drove 30 miles and cost me £25 is that normal?bloody cost me £75 a week in fuel.i had a 90 2.5 petrol before and I thought that was rubbish on fuel I am a son of a farmer so brought up to be tighter than a ducks ass.i got quoted ages ago £1300 to convert my 90 into 200 tdi is that about average price?as may have go down that route of changing this engine for 200tdi.i would have ago at changing myself but haven't got a pit or a lift so I'd think I'd strugle getting engine out.or if anyone on here might want do a swap for diesel! :D

The only V8 landys I've owned were Discos and I ran them on LPG which gave me the cost equivalent of about 30 mpg, so I guess I was getting around 15mpg out of it in real consumption. Difficult to say if yours is typical or not as it'll depend a lot on driving style and which 30 miles it was.

Also no idea on the costs of conversion as I did mine myself many moons ago and did it at the side of the road. Does the 1300 include all the bits or is that just the labour?

Yes that includes all parts ,engine etc and labour and they get the original engine out of your Landy. Ok that 30 miles I say average about 40 mph part of it bit stop and starting through rush hour traffic. Is a pit or lift essential I when you changed your engine over? We got tractors that I was thinking could lift out engine if securely fixed ?and lower new one in Or is that a stupid idea in my head sounds like good idea!

When I did mine I just hired an engine hoist. Stripped the front of the Landy, whipped out the engine and gearbox complete, stuck the new stuff together and stuck it back in.

However, mine was a TD to TDi so no moving of engine mounts or gearbox changes etc. I think you'd need a different gearbox as well when replacing the engine from a V8 to 200.

To be honest, it isn't going to take long burning up 1300 in fuel alone if you don't get it done. I guess it comes down to 'are you willing to pay that amount'. Do you know what state the donor engine is in? 1300 all in for a good engine and all the work is not bad in my opinion but if the donor is a pile of crap then not so good.

But then again, I paid 1300 for just a gearbox

seen a few very very tidy CSW V8's lately all in the 6 - 10K range but they were A1, on the flipside I paid £1500 for mine a couple of years ago, 50k on the clock, 12 months MOT, clean, tidy and straight, faded blue paintwork and it was a CSW.
People will pay what they are prepared to pay but without seeing it in the flesh it could be anything from £1000 upwards.

£1300 does seem cheap for a full conversion given the work in welding in new mounts, changing engine and gearbox etc etc... is it worth doing?? well if the chassis is mint (as mine was) then definately, you could spend 3-4K getting a TDI and be chasing the chassis with patches for years, In my experience the 80's chassis seem far better than the early chassis's from the 90's but it depends on how well yours has been maintained

Is the garage planning on keeping the v8 and box or do you get them back??

Sold my V8 for £250 and the LT 5 speed Santana they are fitted with for £350 so you could be getting £600+ back or they could be factoring that into their price knowing they can sell the removed parts on

Cheers Steve

Oh and an original V8 unmolested is just what the American export market is screaming for..... over 25 years and on its original running gear.. definately valuable

Cheers Steve

My series III Stage One v8 was a very similar vehicle - I managed about 15mpg mixed, 20 possible on a long run.
If you have a LPG equipped garage nearby, a LPG conversion looks like a better option to me - the V8 is a fab engine to live with, as long as you look after the cooling. Plenty of people doing LPG conversions, there may even be second hand kits on ebay. Then if you decide at a later stage to convert to an oil burner, it's still an option.

i changed my v8 to a 300tdi, there is quite a few "bits" you will need, other than the engine. you will need a gearbox and transfer box, you will need to change the transmission tunnel and modify the seatbox, depending on engine/gearbox choice you will need to sort out exhaust and mounts, propshafts, water hoses and clutch pipes. i also changed the coolant header tank to the modern one.

as i done the work everything has been done to make it factory standard. only 300tdi parts were used so i wouldnt struggle getting specialist parts made up.

£1300 sounds cheap, so check what the garage is doing

Thanks for all replys I haven't really consider LPG conversion as didn't really understand it and don't have a clue about fitting cost, maintenance can you do that yourself?and can you use LPG and petrol and how do you swap between the two?but would like keep the v8 as sounds nice and drives nice plus my little brother has got series 3 2quater petrol and he challenged me to off-road race so like keep it ,to keep him in his place.

usualy its all plumbed in, my neighbours switches from gas to petrol when the gas reaches a certain low level. he also has a switch to manually change over from one to the other, he runs it in gas all the time but always has the petrol tank brimmed in case he finds himself not near an LPG station.

he does feck all maintenance to the LPG system, just fills it up. Needs a pecialist garage to work on though but generally they are quite good if installed correctly

We have a volvo 2.4 t fitted with LPG and all it needs is a yearly service at a centre which is not much more than a tank of fuel and the lubricating oil needs topping up every so often.

As for switching over, the car starts on petrol, switches over to LPG after about 2 minutes. When the gas runs out, an alarm sounds but it automatically switches over but then you flick a switch and the alarm stops. Fill up with gas and then flick the switch back.

make sure you use petrol often though, it will burn your carbs out, mine wrecked the pistons as well, thats why i went 300tdi

My 100 inch V8 on carbs, has a rebuilt engine and is all set up nicely, but as mostly I just do short trips in it with the engine mostly cold I get a mile for every pound of guzzle I put in it, i think its something to do with the loud trouser exhaust its got though heh. But I drove it back from Wolverhampton last year and it only used £30.
Before people blah on about running a 36 year old RV8 cold, I let it idle for about 5-10 mins before I use it, just the damn thing takes so long to warm up. Might look at a 4.6 with a auto box next year. I have got a discovery V8 LPG kit in my barn, with two long LPG tanks, dunno what its worth as its used?

thats the problem with v8's they sound so good that you cant help stomp the loud pedal.

i have a mate with an aston v8 vantage, that gets single figure MPG on a good run. but bloody #### me its sooo nice when you blip the throttle......

every blip is about a tenner of fuel though :D
