v6 auto

Selling our freelancer. Bought it in 2003 from LR.

the problem is not the cost to fix it.. I do not think it would cost much to fix the electric windows/ sunroof and wiper. And my trusted indy said the noise underneath would not be more than 200-300 quid. It will also need 4 new tires.

The problem is we already have 3 cars and just bought a small city car so the children can learn to drive. Cannot have 4 cars.

My wife 11 year old car cannot go as she loves it... and I also love my 14 year old BMW... so the landy needs to go. We already kept it 9 years without really needed it.

I am playing it down on ebay as I do not want problems / people coming back complaining... hence selling it for parts.

I thought it could be a classic but my Indy laughed when I told him so he convinced me to chose the BMW. I can take the BMW and drive to Italy if I want. Safely and confident it will make it there and return 50 MPG. Via Germany, i could push it to 140 mph.

The landy... not sure... last time I drove it more than 10 miles... it broke down on the motorway near Southampton and needed a new fuel pump. And that reminds me, it drinks like crazy. 12 mpg in town. lucky to get 20mpg on motorway cruising at 70.

It's like the VIS system isn't functioning.
A KV6 should do closer to 20 MPG on the urban cycle.
Mine always did 19 MPG on my Cornish A and B road commute. However when the Power valve VIS motor packed up, the MPG dropped to about 12, which is why a working VIS system is so important on them. Old gearbox fluid can also cause a drop in MPG, but not nearly as bad as a VIS system issue.

Maybe but it drank a lot from nearly new so not convinced.

Some early V6s had VIS failure from a few hundred miles, caused by oil getting in to the plenum, over the running in period.
This issue was rectified after 2002, when a slightly different breather design was installed, although it only extended the VIS motor life, rather than cure the issue completely.

I love the KV6 myself, although I always thought it should have been available with a manual box as well as the auto.

I prefer autobox in general but that KV6 auto is very lazy... you find yourself going uphill with the box not retrograding... always had to put on manual and doing it manually... on the other hand, if you push it... it will let the engine go to 7,000 rpm, screaming and not accelerating much... anyway.. not a very good box. But it proved itself reliable... not any issues with issues.

The gearbox control module wasn't programmed with the correct change points IMO.

As you said, it either didn't allow sufficient engine speed to develop maximum torque (@4200 RPM), or would drop 2 gears instead of 1, allowing the engine to spin to the red line. While the engine would be quite happy all day at the red line, it's hardly an economical way to run the engine.
I've seen the KV6 engine consume 1 litre of fuel per minute at full power, which would work out to under 5MPG.

A manual box would fix the autobox issues, making the vehicle more economical to run, if a little more involved for the driver.

I stopped the ebay auction. I was getting tons of emails of people trying to buy outside ebay for £50. No joke. Also, some had limited English and I could not even understand what they were proposing.

I had the same issue when I was selling my TD4 SE.
The Freelander is quite popular in Eastern Europe, so I found lots of people from there, trying to buy mine for almost nothing.
They got a no which often ended in the word off!!

If it was a facelift, I'd have been tempted, but your price isn't far from the mark.

Can you hang of to it until autumn? When the price and desirability increases?

I could but the idea is not to maximise the amount... we had this car for 18 years so it is more emotional...

I can understand the emotional connection to a car. I still have my second car, which I saved up for, for 2 years to buy it off a friend dad.
It's in my garage, looking rather sorry for itself just now. However I do plan on getting it back to its former glory, at which point I'll use it for a bit, but thinking of selling it on.
