On the image attached, is this pipe meant to have some kind of hose or whatever attached?

Just trying to figure out where my fluid has gone!

That's the box breather alright ;)
If the box fluid is low and there isn't a leak from the bottom? Then it's likely that not enough fluid has been put in!! It can't come out the breather pipe unless you turn the car over!!

Ok thanks, but here's a weird thing (or maybe not).
When I look down the filler hole, no fluid is visible. Even if changing through the gears with the engine running, at no point is the fluid visible. So we assumed the level was low, based on the assumption (yes I know) that there must be some visible otherwise how can you dip a thermometer in it to test the temperature?
On draining the box, about 3.5 litres of dirty oil (but no fragments) came out, which is about right.
Huge sigh of relief when I realised the box didn't have to come off to replace a seal!
Refilled with 3.5 litres and topped up until it leaked through the overflow thingy.
Ran the engine for a while, cycling through the gears, then did a second flush and got more muck. Still no fluid visible even when engine hot and cycling etc.

Does this sound right?

A change is about 3.5 litres, but I don't think you'll be able to see anything though the filler other than the top of the valve block!! The only way to tell the fluid level is by way of the level plug on the bottom of the gearbox casing. Hippo has done a write up on fluid changes ;)

Indeed it was Hippo's write-up that I was going by. Excellent guide :)

Going for 1 more flush-through tomorrow before I take it for a drive. Hopefully the dodgy changes will have improved.

You are better off driving a few hundred miles between flushes. Auto fluid contains a cleaner but it takes time and heat to work ;)

If you get oil out of the auto's breather pipe it's either got far too much oil in it or something amazing has gone wrong.
