My 2001 freelander (with 134km on the clock) started to develop a clunking noise when going through the gears and when taking off from a stationary position.

This coincided with small amounts of oil leaking from the sump area on a daily basis. The leak continued for a few weeks and the other day, I went out to the garage and there was no leak. So, I thought to myself, "must get that fixed" !

Anyway, took it for a drive yesterday and it gives me near-on whiplash during gear changes now. It is undriveable.

I have check visually under the car and have a strong feeling that it is out of transmission oil.

Can anyone tell me where the filler plug is cause, there is no dipstick !

Also, have I created any long term damage to the box ?

Eggsactly the same problem I had. 2001 v6. Auto oil leaked out, oil was low, and air got in the torque converter. Result being a huge bang when changing gear as the torque converter cavitates. More likely to do it when restarting when warm. Although will start to do it when up to temp. My problem continued after the garage did a level check, resistance check of the solenoids, and a T4 computer check. That’s normally the first step in diagnosis. Everything was ok, but they forgot to tell me it was leaking, and I didn’t see anything coming out. Main dealers eh? Gear change into drive was bumpy, and 2nd was no betterer after a bit. Clutches perhaps on the way out... not sure.

The more you drive it like this, the more damage you’ll do to it. In the end mine had a recon auto fitted as they couldn’t stop the leak from the side panel. Also blew the seals more by stopping on the side of the road and topping it up incorrectly, as I didn’t give a **** at the time as it was ****ed anyways. Over filling blew 2 other outer seals. You can get issues wiff solenoids etc, but wiff auto oil leaking out (should be red) then I would think it’s that that’s causing the problem.

Main dealer charged £2200 to replace wiff a recon in 2007. They did this the quickest way for them, which it to remove the engine/auto/ird and swop the auto on the floor. Then refit. Independents were £1800, but the days off work and 1 night hotel etc were not worth the bothering.

The Jatco auto oil level check has a set procedure, which can be found on this thread: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/jatco-automatic-gearbox-69336.html
