V5 model changes

I recently bought a 109 6 cyl to rebuild. Having sent off the V5 which had not been swopped over to the previous owner (it was barn find landy) I found it said "109-4cyl" as the model description.
The chassis and engine numbers are correct as well as the cc capacity on the V5 and unless I can't count up to six the engine is most definteley 6 cyl.
Trying the various VIN identifiers online also shows it as a 6 cyl.
Having sent the V5 back with a note I got a reply today saying they could not change the description without a letter from the manufacturer.
Any other avenues to check before I write to Landrover to say the vehicle was registered with the wrong information in 1982 and its causing a problem!

would they accept a letter from ur local Land Rover dealer

is there any mot history online that u could print out , proving the engine size
 
They have specifically excluded a dealer and insist manufacturer. I have written to Landrover to ask for advice and documentation. It seems the vehicle has been registered as a 4 cyl since it was built in 1982 and nobody had noticed. Its no as if you can just swop the engines over as there are fairly significant differences in the bulkhead and chassis.
I am sure LR will give me a letter and I'll get DVLA to change the model. Its not as if they done have the correct 6 cyl engine number and capacity registered on the V5
 
Makes a change for it not to be the DVLA's fault - I had WW2 American truck once that some bowler-hat had hit the wrong keys & managed to transpose the vehicle weight & engine capacity on the V5. Made for interesting reading o_O
 
There's something doesn't square up with the history. Is it really likely to be a mistake by Land Rover? There's a gap between the ownership and the V5. Are there any other features that indicate it's a genuine 6 cylinder? Is it a One Ton? What about the suspension etc.?

Been on holiday, hence the delay. Land Rover have replied asking for the chassis number and engine number and they can help. Unfortunately I have given them all I have and the VIN plate doesn't seem to have all the various numbers they want. Also I can't find the stamped number on the chassis.
While this is a problem I am 99% certain that this is the original chassis, the original VIN plate and the original engine and it has been like this since built.
I assume the error is a simple transcription error when being registered by someone. I don't think anybody had noticed, even I didn't until the new V5 came through
 
I have started the rebuild of this vehicle and am now looking into the details. having done as much simple online research it has thrown up more queries.
I am convinced that the 4 cyl thing is just a typo, the V5 also says its a 2628cc and the Vin and chassis numbers says it was a 6 pot, with the fact that is absolutely a suffix C six pot in reality I can be sure that this is just a typo by DVLA.
However I have managed to get the number it was until 1987 when it was registered with the current number plate, it seems it was a NI number. this explains the gap and why it was not marked with an export marker and why it is a RHD UK model on the VIN number.
So far so good, the latest issue is that the vehicle may not be a 1982 built vehicle, as far as I can find the 6 pot was not offered as an option after 1980. This means it is almost certainly earlier than 1982, apart from making it tax exempt now rather than in a couple of years it also makes it older than I thought.
Does anybody have ranges of VIN numbers that correlate roughly to build years so I can work out likely dates of build? Mine is 941269** where roughly would that have been built compared to other VIN numbers around that range? Does the spec number 941 make a difference or are they all simply consecutive?

VIN number is different to chassis number you have a chassis number VIN was introduced in 1980...early S3 chassis numbers dont show build date as from 62-79 they used an 8 didget number with a suffix letter after that 80 onwards S3 had a VIN number...chassis number 941 indicates a standard 109...946 chassis number would indicate a station wagon... that is the only 2 identification chassis numbers for a 109 6cyl next 5 numbers is the serial number and letter suffix is design modifications which might date your vehicle but yours is pre 1980...
 
My researches seem to show that 941 is a standard 109 fitted a six pot, the 269**C is the number itself following this code, would be good to see where this number fits into any sequence of builds of similar vehicles to get an idea of date but like you have said it should be pre1980 rather the 1982 that is on the V5 as date of manufacture
 
I don’t know if it’s of any use but I once imported a car from NI and the date of manufacture was 3 years out (1981 golf and had year of manufacture down as 1984) - I imported it in around 1998 ish - and it was a right ball ache to sort out.
 
I am hoping a Heritage cert will sort it all out eventually but curious until I do this to try and pin down the year of build. There are lot of things wrong on the V5, apparently its a 3 door hatchback and despite the V5 showing the number of the engine actually fitted right now with six cylinders it says its a 4 pot. I can count up to six so its definitely not only 4 uppy and downy bits in there.:D
 
It isn't a 3 door hatchback! There are various descriptions used on V5 for 109's but hatchback isn't one of them.
It does look, the more I check the V5 and look into it, as if two six year olds made it all up there are so many errors its laughable!
