As title says really my dads freelander wont start and i changed battery in the fob but nothing so i thought the fob was dead but i took the alarm unit, ecu and transponder from my freelander and still the fobs for my freelander wont take the immobilizer off :(

so put the ecu, alarm unit from my dads car and put it in my landy and seems to be working fine with his fob so what could it be?

any help would be great

cheers
saul :)

normally when u change the battery u have to press the lock button 5 x times quickly in order to resynch it

u can turn the immobilser off via ur key

not sure if it will create problems if u swap ecus etc around as it may mess up codes and lock u out of the resynch sequence ???

unless the receiver has failed that's fitted in ur instrument panel

try resyching the fob , but u can turn it off with the key , put it i to the lock and unlock it twice in quick succession and u will see the red light hows off

the fobs seem to be working fine for there correct alram units and ecus so the fobs are fine mate :)

wheres the receiver? i thought it was round the ignition barrel??

interesting do you do this is the drivers door lock??

the receiver is behind the instrument panel , sits on the top right hand side , have to take out the clock assembly plastic cover and surround, it's has a small aerial on it

u have a black cover that sits on top of ur instruments, take the top off and u will see the small unit ,top rh side , has a small aerial attached

yes use the drivers door lock

sorry I thought u was using the same fob etc for the different cars

if u out everything back i to ur car, make sure u have the battery disconnected , then try and resynch ur fob , if not turn the alarm off via the drivers door lock

the ign has a ring around the barrel, that has to synch with the small transponder in ur key

when u reconnect the battery , press the lock or unlock button on ur fob 5 x quickly and then it should resynch ,

lastly if that doesn't work , try twice quickly unlocking with ur key in the drivers side lock and that will trun ur immobilser off

hope it helps a little bit

i have removed the little green box thats on the speedo dials and put the working one in the car and still nothing :(

i tried all that mate and still can't get the dam immobilizer off :( i have taken everything thats working and put it in my dads landy still not having any luck

tried to take it off with the door lock trick but still wont go off so not sure what to do now

On my '99 L Series there's a light that flashes on the dash when the car's locked/alarmed. If the imobiliser kicks in this light stays lit. Do you have something showing?

I ask to determine if its the imobiliser or just the starter electrics.

Once again, it may vary by model but there's a thread just gone through where Fuse F1 in the engine compartment fuse box is the starter fuse and it kept blowing - worth checking. That was a 1.8 and the cause in the end was the starter relay.

yeh mate same as the 1.8k series which is what my dads landy is and yeh thats good to ask but deffantly immobilizer thats at fault as the red light is staying on :(

would that fuse stop the immobilizer from being turn'd off as i am stumped at what is wrong as the car has been working perfectly fine till it parked up today turned it ignition off couldn't lock it with the fob so used the key and now can't get the immobilizer off even tho i have tested everything on my car so i no it all works but obviously something on my dads freelander is stoping it from work :(

strange

so is the red light still showing up on the dashboard

if it's still there by unlocking the car with the key does the red light go off

have u tried disconnecting the battery off for 30 mins to reboot the ecus

suppose the best thing is to get the alarm off first with the key , can then concentrate on the remote fob

maybe the remote is faulty as it won't turn the immobilser off ,

does the remote lock and unlock the car doors .

is ur main battery fully charged

try the key first to get the red light off then disconnecting the main battery

u didn't remove any ecus with the battery still connected did u , as there's warnings not to as it can cause problems .

check ur fuses as well to ensure none of them are blown , easier to just use a multimeter putting the test leads onto the back of every fuse , saves u having to pull each and every one out

see how u get on plse

Gonna have to say. Why do you even think it's the immobiliser? Is it just an assumption? Perhaps it's just broken down? I'd approach it from a different angle. ie
Does it crank?
Does it crank really fast?
Can you hear the fuel pump?
Can you hear the fuel pump second run on cranking?
Has it got a spark?
Are the plugs wet?
Are you in the RAC?
Etc! ;)

yeh mate red light is still showing and wont go off with the key i have left the battery off last night so will try again today the battery is nearly a new battery mate so can't see that being at fault and i will check all the fuses to see if any have gone

i would say its the immobilizer as you can't lock or unlock the car with the fob and can't get the red light off thats on the speedo dials so it is immobilized

put the key in the ignition and all the lights come on as they should but it is immobilized and will not left the car start :(

i can lock the car with the key to set the alarm and open the door which takes it off but the car is still immobilized just strange to me

hi mate

does the engine turn over , have u got a 12 volt supply on the back of the starter motor

was it like this before swapping round ecus etc

so u can lock and unlock the car with the key but the red light won't go out

when u disconnected the battery then reconnected did the red light come straight back on

on opening the doors will the alarm go off

has the car been power washed at all

just trying to go through it step by step to see what it will and won't do

are the fuses all ok inside and under the bonnet

leads ok , earth and positive straps psle

have u kept the other fob away from yours

will it resynch by pressing it five times quickly
then try and put the fob right next to the ignition barrel ring and try it or next to the instrument panel where the receiver unit is

Believe it's age dependent. But the key transponder should turn off the imobiliser without the remote. We still have no info on even whether it cranks or not. Suspect your looking too deeply into it without checking basics. Did you swap the aerial from the ignition barrel to make sure that's reading the key?

Have you double checked the battery in the fob? Right type, right way round Tested known good battery etc

Have you put a code reader on the car to see if it thinks its got any problems? eg faulty bonnet lift switch.

will answer all the replys in one answer as its easier :)

managed to get the landy started by taking the original fob, ecu and alarm box (thats on the back of the fuse box) put it in my landy to check the fob was working and it is working perfectly so battery is in correct way :) so locked my landy and unlocked it with the fob so everything is de mobilized and quickly disconnected battery and removed the ecu and alarm box thing

put it all back in my dads freelander and quickly put the battery on and started up 1st time while the red light was out :) so managed to get the car home so its easier to work on :)

turned the car off and red light came back on and blinks as it should but the fob will not take take the alarm/immobilizer off like the fob is dead but we no it works was it controlled everything fine in my car :)

so locked the car with the key and unlocked it with the key and alarm goes off when open bonnet so turn key agen and alarm goes off but red light always stays on and will not go out :(

i have changed the transponder and the immobilizer receiver and tested those on my car and works fine

also checked all fuses inside the car and the engine bay and swapped all the relays from my car to this one and still nothing :( so i am lost haha

i haven't had it on a code reader yet as local garage ain't around till next week

but like i say car starts fine when the immobilizer was switched off with the fob before refiting everything back into my dads freelander so what else do i check????

Isn't the transponder in the key? If so it sounds like it's not being detected by whatever sensor is in the steering column. Any work been done in this area?

On my '99 the transponder is in the fob. When I got the car I had the belts changed and left car and key with garage. I got a call shortly after saying it wouldn't start - I had to take the fob down there!

Later models its all in the key.
