The good news is it just passed it's mot!!! Can't believe it sailed through after being sorn for so long :)

the bad news is I'm half way home and have broken down..

Stopped at lights and suddenly the engine felt rough, as if it was missing a cylinder. Loads of black smoke out the back and now lack of power.
Am stood in car park waiting for it to cool down - any suggestions???

I brought me tool kit!! :( :(

Oh and the high/low range/difflock lever is shaking violently, not sure whether this is due to lumpy engine..

wierd.... If its black smoke then its getting diesel, i wouldve said check all turbo hoses, but even if they are off it will idle ok - might be worth a quick check. Is the engine wobbling about on idle? If so thats why the lever is shaking.

Thanks for your speedy responses!!
I let it cool down for 30mins, now the engine is very shakey on tick over, rocks from side to side.
The smoke coming out the back is white, not sure whether I imagined it being black earlier. Shall crack open the fuel filter bleed screw to see if it's getting fuel..

No smoke at all now just lumpy!
Also, no air in the fuel seems to be coming out of top of filter okay..

Sounds like a dropped valve or HGF  Did the MOT Tester rag the arse off it for the emissions test?

Arr man no way!!!

It wasn't ragged at mot station, I was giving it some beans but only as much as the autobox could give up to 65-70mph... :(

Maybe given your other recent thread it is the head gasket/head. White smoke is a symptom. Try limp it home and get some water to top it up if you need to.

Not sounding good.. check fuel turbo ect. but I think you're gonna have to take head off it. & I reckon it'll have blown at no 4 cylinder.???

Got it home okay, particulary pi££ed 'orf now!
I thought these engines were pretty solid as long as they don't lose water?
When the head originally went (previous owner) it still ran smooth just lost water.

In this case I'm not losing any water, no oil or ehaust in water reservoir just lumpy engine

if it is just HG then it'll be fine Lumpy running could be lack of compression between 2 cylinders. If you've eliminated fueling problems then Head will need to come off. good thing is it's an easy job and as it's OHV it doesn't require timing etc to be sorted out.

Thanks
I've already had the head off, stripped it down (removed valves etc) then got it skimmed & pressure tested, re-lapped the valves, new valve seals and HG - do I need to do this all over again?! :(

if I buy a compression tester will that give me a definitive answer re. HGF or could the leak be too small to show up?

Thanks

Comp tester will show it up if it is leaking as willl a sniff test. If the head was skimmed properly then it shouldn't have gone that quickly unless head gasket was defective or there's an underlying problem that caused HGF in the frst place

Just been to me local car factors, diesel compression testers ain't ruddy cheap!!
The guy suggested checking injectors for any blockage, I guess itcan be done by removing 'em from cylinder head whilst still connected to fuel lines and cranking the engine over..

I was wondering why I'd not heard from you about taking a look at the car - I guess events have overtaken original plans!!! Anyway, let us know what the plan is - PM me details, etc???

Slack each injector pipe in turn with the engine running, see if there's one that makes little difference .

Did you recheck the valves after you first run it ?, a tight clearence can cause rough running .

Yes sorry mate had a rather hectic day!
Pm ya in a bit :)

The cylinder nearest bulkhead seems to be where the problem is (seems you could be right redhand!)
there was no increased 'lumpiness' when slackening the injector feedpipe with this one but there was with all the other cylinders.
Swapped the injector with EDC wire with a spare and it's still running on 3.
Now in the process of checking valve gaps.
Thanks for everyones advice, anything else before comitting to removing the head (AGAIN!)..
