Hey guys. On the way to the inlaws for xmas and my 300 tdi started knocking and lost power. Pulled over and think its broken a pushrod. Rac on route. Anyone near got any spares/tools. Cheers.

Unfortunately I'm too far away to help out, sounds like it may be rocker shaft broke, usually due to stud pulling out of head, I'm only guessing though of course, hope you get sorted, I'm sure there's someone closer that will help

Think you can put a longer stud/bolt in aswell as there will be some thread left below the original stud/bolt ( just a thought that might help )

Well finally got to my destination late xmas eve. The garage i was towed to told me the rocker shaft was in four pieces and that they would try their best to get it running again. So i spent the next hour watching their efforts and true to there word they got it running. They advised me that they had rethreaded the hole in the head and set all the valve clearences but couldnt guarentee that it would last and when the mechanic was asked by the boss did you test drive it he laughed and said no which blew my confidence in their bodgery a bit. Then after a bit of banter with the boss the bastard hit me with a bill of £228 for labour and claimed he had used a new 'special' tool to set the valve clearences!! :mad2:Will defo be complaining to the rac about them and their affiliated garages ripping people off. Oh well, rant over and lesson learned. Next time i will just get recovered to my destination and sort it out myself:rolleyes: merry xmas :D

Gutted I've only just seen this.

Can folk please report urgent threads in here please so they'll be picked up.

Sorry never thought of using the report button, will do if I come across anything like this again, gutted that they got ripped off, defo report to rac, I work in the breakdown recovery business and sad to see this type of thing happen

Well it got us to the midlands so worked so far, just annoyed that they decided to rip us off like that at christmas of all times. I mean it wasnt hard for them to see we had 4 kids with us and a battered old disco. They must have thought i was made of money  the worst thing is they made out they were doing us a massive favour on the price!! Hope it makes it home at the weekend....

So they helicoiled and repaired it, seems that if £228 is bill shock then your either running a vehicle you can't afford or living in dream.
Try a main dealer and your know what a spanking is.
I refuse to do work from 23rd December unless call outs for good money

I agree with he last two posts. When you think that £40 will have gone straight into Boy George's pocket, then less than £200 for an emergency repair on Christmas Eve - probably when they were looking forward to knocking off and going home - was not expensive. It wasn't a straightforward job either. Just think what it would have cost if you'd had to hire a vehicle on Christmas Eve to finish your journey. Send the guy a bottle of scotch and be grateful!

Cheaper than the other options:- taxi/ hotel and food or hire car etc if anyone wanted to know Christmas Eve.

We had a ****er at hotel reception last night who didn't book online and refused to follow the booking requirements that chap on reception said he would get sacked if he didn't follow.
After 15mins of ****e I walked up and said to the customer he was a complete ****er and pay up or #### off as he was disturbing my quiet pint.
I also email hotel to say that the guy on reception had been polite and helpful and if I was on reception I'd have told the guy to find somewhere else.

Lets get things straight shall we.
1. This wasnt after hours
2. All they did was retap a hole and set the valve clearences
3. It was about an hours work
4. They didnt replace any parts.
So yes i was expecting a reasonable bill of 100 to 150 quid not 228. Had i have known it would be that much i would have had the disco towed to my destination and fixed it myself! You lot might be well versed in coughing up for repairs on your vehicles but im a tight b**tard and do all the repairs on my disco because i can.

Don't forget you said the rocker shaft was in four pieces. That doesn't sound like a quick fix.

Its still in four pieces!!! Its split in the usual places where the valve cover studs go through the shaft. Thats what im ranting about, the fact i have still got to sort it out. Fair enough if they replaced it.
