Not so new really - it's just that it's starting to bite more than before.

Back in 2007/8 the good old EU gave all countries the 'right' to have designated 'emission zones'.

So London imposed a daily fee - to make money.

Germany introduced a window sticker system to show how clean or otherwise a vehicle is - only €5 - a one off payment I think - or at least it was when I last checked out the situation.

They have red, yellow and green stickers.

Over the years they have enforced stricter and stricter 'colour bans' - at first only the red stickers were banned from city centres, then yellow, and so on until now only the cleanest 'green' cars are allowed in.

Of course this means loads of signage and CCTV cameras and dedicated Polizei to collect the fines from folks who ignore such rules - mostly foreigners of course who live by a different compliance code to the Bavarians.

In return for all this obedience you can drive at any speed you like on a fair portion of the autobahn - but when they do have a speed limit -everyone slows down - instantly - or else a man in a beige shirt and green trousers, with a pretty hat appears at the next interchange like a Jack in the Box to collect the cash.

Great fun - a Sat-Nav that displays speed limits in an essential tool.

No, no - plenty of big-engined low-efficiency-rated cars still thrashing along the autobahns - it's just they don't get into the city centres.

Germany is still a car-loving, speed-happy, free to drive anywhere country. Unlike some others I can name.

I have a whole strip of stickers (or Vignettes as they're called)
for Motorway Tolls:
Switzerland- CHF40 for a year
Austria - €8.30 for 10 days,
Slovenia - €15.00 for 7 days

They have special police at the motorway junctions and exits - all ready to grab what they can from un-knowing (or cheating) tourists.

I've just checked the info for the emission stickers and you are now allowed to fit extra filters to get to the next level.

The sneaky rascals have changed the rules when my back was turned.

So there we have it - fit a dpf and get a GREEN sticker for your Hippo.

Thanks Singvogel. Yes I agree, I think it's completely mad with those zones. On the Frankfurt Homepage you can read that it should have improved breathing for asthmatics and People with lung probs or so. Well then we could start to introduce better nutrition, hence a better immune system, hence I could drive car like it is. I think it's really total c.... If you drive on the Autobahn 100 (km/h) and you want to change the lane somecome Comes with 200 is crazy. I think is more like hell race. Totally extrem like that s..t with green zone.

Yes you could fit in a dpf but at what Price. There shall be a guy in eastern Germany you could call. I think he comes around fitting it and does everything with the paperwork for 1200€ or so, which shall be a bargain. How to do with DVLA would be the question.
