i reckon yer got one of them there 'rivnuts' on it... yer gonna have to drill the head orf, grind thehead orf or attack it from behind ( ask yella fer advice on that last one)

Just to add completeness to the thread; the nut was in some sort of expanding fastner and was eventually released with an angle grinder. Replaced with a more traditional nut and bolt.

I'm not entirely sure, but after looking up these things on the web, I believe so.
