Series 2 Unknown piston part number 514117

G'day Folks,

Does any one know about 2.25 diesel pistons with the part number 514117?

These are fitted to my 1965 series 2a station wagon's engine.

The pistons are knackered so I need to replace them but it is "interesting" (bloody typical) to find that the number doesn't exist in the parts catalogue or on any of the 'addocks sites...

...internet search produces lots of other threads asking the same question - no answers.

Thanks - I've got the part numbers for the replacement pistons - I'm just interested to know more about this weird number that nobody seems to know about

in what way ?piston design changed over time so did the number, plus the number used by the factory wasnt necessarily the one used for replacement pistons , factory pistons would come in various grades ,replacement just one choice

Well for example - is the part number related to the graded variations listed in the "green bible" page 72-A2 or is the part number related to the letter stamping mentioned on page 71-A2 for the diesel engines "ZAB" or "BCD".

The pistons I have are marked with BCD as you can see in the picture. Is that enough to say that that part number is for those specific pistons?

Slightly different matter - the pistons have the BHB manufacturer marking. Interweb gives hits for BHB making Norton motor bike pistons - what ever happened to BHB as a company? I can't find them now. Seems to have been a company in Twickenham =>

i doubt youd find many companies still going if they are its in name only,
its possible number is, but its common practice to find service pistons have different numbers to those factory fitted

Not sure what the problem is but bhb (or hepilex) disappeared many years ago into gkn and as far as I can tell, they never reused the name.
They made Pistons for cars and bikes. Don't know about the diesel ones but the petrol Pistons had "self adjusting" rings that are next to impossible to get now.
Sometimes the quest for originality can become too obsessive. Just buy some new Pistons.

I'm not actually being anal about originality - I'm interested in mechanical things. I know poo loads of stuff about Mercedes vehicles and would like to expand the knowledge base to series Land Rovers

Sorry to mention Mercedes again but "the Germans" have at least stuck with the same numbering system during production and servicing. It sounds like a totally crazy system to have different numbers. What a logistical nightmare! Sure numbers change - but there's a record (kind of a bookmark) that says "now use this number instead"...
