Hi guys
I have a 90 with 2.5td (19j) after year owning the landy I started having problem with the starter motor. When I inspected it I find out that I that loose nuts rust bla bla… Anyway I manned to repair and I did another year or so, sometimes was stops but with just a small hit with the hammer it would be back in business. At the end it was being too often and so I decide to but a new one. I bought a Bosch starter (supposedly one of the best in the market) it worked fine for the first 5 months then winter arrived. I passed from a puddle of water maybe 10cm deep with speed (as I had done this several times before) the following week I didn’t use it I was abroad . when I tried to start it I didn’t start as the solenoid got corrosion. Well I did not expect that on a new Bosch. It got fixed problem solved. 6 months later I got a new problem with it the solenoid was getting stuck again (you realized because the starter motor start to turning before the teeth are completely out resulting in loud weird noises and failed to turn the engine) this time I’m like “I’m going to fill the whole thing with lubricant so it won’t happen again” and it worked well for another month then it started again.
I don’t know what is wrong here the starter motor is new ,all the teeth are in good condition both of the flyway and the starter motor. Any one of you have any suggestions ???

Thanks

Its my understanding that the starter gears are not supposed to be oiled as otherwise the clutch dust collects on the oil and forms a sludge. I know this was the case on older Bendix type starters.
I'd take yours apart and give it a good clean. Lubricate the solenoid and drive gear shaft with some graphite rather than grease or oil.
