Whilst doing battle with my car this weekend I looked in to why I have a rattle from under the car and saw the underbody heat shield on the drivers side has split in two.

I now have forward and rearward sections. Does anyone know a way I could reliable join the two halves together? I'm not sure what they're made of, foil coated fibreglass sheet or something.

If I can't join them up, it's the rear half that's loose, how important is it? Can I get away with just taking it off, or should I replace it?

Strip of soft alloy and some large flange pop rivets should do it.

Well they're off!

I had a look this weekend, and they were in much worse condition than I thought.

The drives side was in four quarters, and the other side was split right up the middle.

Because they had both been lying on the CAT the vibrations have worn all the centre bit away. When I went to move them they just came off in my hand. I've taken them off for now, and will need to replace them with new.

I'm not worried about the underfloor section, but the bit that goes up the back of the engine bay looks like it was protecting some sound deadening foam.

it's been okay so far, but I'm a bit worried this is going to melt with the heat from the downpipes… or worse. Do you think it's safe?

Keep a large fire extinguisher handy:rolleyes:

I hope my wife doesn't read this!

At least there's loads of airflow down there. It'll either keep things cool, or fan the flames.
