You could attempt a fairer test, avoiding the "placebo effect". In order to do this you need to be ignorant of the fuel in use, thereby avoiding subjective reading of vehicle performance. Just get someone else to fill her up, and in order that you don`t work out which fuel is in the tank they`ll have to pay too.
I`ve been looking for an assistant in this experiment for the last two years.... voulenteer anyone?

That's a fair comment and I am well aware that there is a possibility that the outcome can be influenced simply by perception and my assumed expectations, but I have had the car for 4 years and I know it inside out and as a consequence I feel comfortable and confident in saying what I did.

But I agree with you a blind test would be a lot less subjective, my son is covered to drive the car, so getting a volunteer to do this wouldn't be an issue. However, the only real problem here is how often do you do the blind test?

Ideally, you would need to do it at least three or four time, and I think he'd be a bit hacked off at shelling out £400+ for fuel for my car but I of course could always pay him back after the experiment was completed.
 
I think you`re starting to see where I`m coming from... I am prepared to offer my vehicle up as a permanent test-bed. A ten year time line may form a suitable base. I`ll willingly fill in reports so long as you keep on filling `er up.

That's a great offer and my son will be quite pleased to have his own Range Rover for the next 10 years, what with no servicing, tax etc., and with only paying for the fuel he'll be quids in.

I'll PM you regarding the collection of it from Normandy, and we can kill two birds with the one stone here and start the experiment on the long trip back.

Touche' ! But under your scheme I`ll be unable to compile the reports, so I`ll have to say `no` and await another sponser.
But as a question: have you considered trying a performance test with the two fuel types? Acelleration standing start to 60mph or rolling 30 to 70? have a passenger use a stopwatch as you call out the start/stop points. Many mob phones etc have stop-watch functions. Try a few passes at each try to rule out error.
As an aside I think we should all do this on a regular (twice a year?) basis. Engine problems can creep up on regular users. Having a datum can possibly detect gradually evolving faults?
 
No not at all, use of inferior fuel as opposed to really good stuff can be quite noticable. But the K&N produced no change at all when swopped for a nearly new standard filter. If increasing the airflow has such a dramatic effect as they claim then just take the filter out altogether for 50MPG and 200 BHP. If you have an old clogged up filter, putting in a £40.00 K&N will of course improve things, but no more than fitting a £4.99 standard one does. So that's my contribution to after market surveying done for this year. £40.00 just to prove a point, what a bloody idiot i am. (No comments regarding my last statement will be taken notice of whatsoever).:cool::cool::cool:

Agreed, K and N filters are not good

expensive in the long run and worse at filtering the air than a good quality standard spec filter

My brother had one before that actually made his car run worse and increased his fuel consumption.
 
Well the experiment has ended, and on this fill I got 22.2 to the gallon, driving conditions were much the same as before, just in case you were thinking otherwise.

However, what I am about to say I will stand by, as (IMO) it can easily be proven, so I really don't care if you all look at your monitors thinking "Yeah, yeah whatever". I'd say I was a level headed kind of person, very logical and a realist but...

When using this fuel, I did notice an obvious difference in the way the car ran and accelerated as it was evidentially smoother (was that down to the cleaning agents in the fuel). When you bury the accelerator pedal in the carpet the revs climb easier and quieter (engine noise) and getting up to speed seemed less of an effort.

Bonkers? Well before you flame me try it for yourself. Remember though that on the fill before this one (the one that gave me 21.8MPG) my car was fully serviced, and had its No 4 injector replaced, so this 'test' is based on these two fills I've had since and I think a very fair comparison.

And, yes, I went back to BP to refill to me it was a 'no brainer'.

BP ultimate is good fuel and defo makes a difference, however Shell fuels are even better, worth a try.
 
I always use shell , since I had my old bmw 325i you could really tell the differnce and since then I only put shell in! not vpower though just the normal one
 
80 litres of the easiest stuff to make from crude oil at £101.96 would be hillarious if it wasn't so bloody serious. How can we be paying this much for something that costs a few pence per litre to produce. It is much easier to produce than petrol yet is more expensive. WHY?

WHY so expensive? Just look at the tax imposed. Which other country imposes a tax on a tax? (Fuel plus tax PLUS vat on that total!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tata already has shown he doesn't give a **** about british business by shutting down the steel plant just so he can get the 600 million off of the EU for "reducing carbon emissions", even though he shipped the tools to India where there is no restrictions on carbon.

I think we are being taken over by the EU and the trade union boss's (who i've found out are mostly trained by a think tank called Common Purpose) are helping them do it.

Sorry to get political but common purpose are definately worth looking into and keeping an eye on.
