225/65/17's be on mine .. straight fit as is ..
( michelin latitude-tour )
speedo will read slightly slower .. about 6% ..

( a gps speed reading .. about on par with the speedo reading ..
( as from the factory .. the speedo reads a bit faster than actual speed

** gearing is slightly higher
rpm for a given speed a tad lower ..

steering slightly less responsive ..
i.e. a tad wider turning circle plus the flex of the higher sidewalls

I have 225/60/17 on my Trek rims. There's enough space to go up to 225/65/17, without the tyres hitting the spring cup.

235/65/17 wouldn't clear the strut, unless spacers are fitted.

[QUOTE="Nodge68, post: right a checked my tyre size on my 2006 td4 and there 215/16r16's what would be the best at tyre to put on

Tried to fit 225 65 17 continental cross contact M +S tyres on my freelander 1 Td4 today, fouled on the inner chassis on full lock and rubbed on the spring cup when cornering hard, other tyre makes may differ but the conti 65's were huge compared with 55's . Side by side 60mm taller. Would need spacers, which I can't afford at the moment.

Personal choice. I like Yokohama Geolanders AT myself. Especially if the 16" Freedom rims fitted.

However you 06 needs higher load tyres than my 05 FL1, which makes finding good AT tyres more of a challenge.
^^^ +1 on above recommendation ^^^

Drove some gentle lanes over Salisbury plain this weekend (and had previously done so earlier in the year), and the car on these tyres did not put a foot wrong and felt terrific. They're great on the road too - so genuinely good all-terrain performance IMO. Happily have them again. :)

okay good good then looks like i need some spacers i thought you would due to the clearance on the stock 225/55r17 and they are extreamly close i was shocked that you said you can go to a 65 series as they would definately foul then going to get the 225/65r17 bfgoodrich at as they are fairly good offroad tyres.

The size of 17" tyre that clear on standard rims is very dependent on the tyre being fitted. I have 225/60/17 Maxxis Bravo AT. These have about 6mm clearance all round.

BFGs are 70s technology tyres. They are only moderate off road and well below moderate on the road. You're better off with some Yokohama Geolander AT/S. They are as good off road as BFGs but far better on it and cost less too ;)
