Hi,

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere but a search on "Tyres" returned nil..

I have a 2001 ESi which now has shagged tyres. Back have been on 40K front have done 20K

The book says tyre pressures should be 26PSI but KwikFit say no, "32/36 or they wear out and deform just like yours have done Sir"

So, what should the pressures be, and can anyone reccomend a set of road tyres as being a woos I never take mine off road and would like to think that road tyres will be quieter and have less rolling resistance than the Goodyear Wranglers and so better fuel consumption.

Thanks for your help.

Depends on the make of course, mine are the standard Michelin's , more a on road tire, i put 32 psi all round, the front ones were shot bout 40k, bought new set for front, rear ones now bout due 60k , depends what type of driving ya do of course. . . the front one's always wear first so if they were an even set swop when half worn front to rear, some say this can have an effect on yer diffs, i say a loada tosh [old fish wife tales] if you do this when half worn will save ya dosh in the long run. . .:)

Thanks for the reply,

So Michelins are good? I do small local journeies and then the odd blast up the motorway at 70-80 when I'll do 200 miles.

BTW how much should I expect to may for the michelins?

Fraggle. . . if yer on tut internet then type in road tyres.com , check them out i paid bout £90 for micheline sycrones [might have spelt it wrong but near as dam it] a good tyre but they do loads , ya have to get a local tyre guy to fit um and balance but still works out cheaper, think i was quoted £150 each for the same type , however word of warning ,never fit a different type front rear, as this will cause all types of problems , on a freelander, and also remember ya have front and rear tracking adjustments, so by fitting odd balls can cause steering probs [i talk from 1st hand experience]. . .:)

Hi all,

I understand that the best (new) tyres have always to be in the rear, as otherwise you can ruin your drivetrain (contrary as to what ming seems to suggest that this is pure b... sh..), also keep enough pressure (like 32 psi) as carmanufacturers and tyremakers seem to recommend lower pressures to make their cars/tyres seem more comfortable but are not at all the ideal pressures. I heard from an independent LR specialist to see for BF Goodrich Macadam (size I have is 215/65x16, here you cannot start playing around with tyresizes, if your car passed the acceptance tests with a certain size one has to stick to that size, thus for me it is and will have to be 215/65x16 H 98, which I think is typical for SUV's, no road tyres for me as they are out of size). Good luck.

I have to admit I did think that it was best practice to keep the front and rear tyres about the same tread depth. If the overall diamater of the tyres vary between front and back it puts extra stress on the centre dif.
Some one correct me if I'm talking bollocks.

Hi Mark,

No, you are right, that's why I try to swop them every 5.000 kms, the rears go in the front as they are (same side) and the fronts go to the opposite rearside (R front goes to L rear, and of course L front goes to R rear). But if putting a pair of new tyres in replacement of two worn out ones make sure to put the new pair in the rear and have the partially worn ones in front.

the recommended pressure for normal driving is 30psi all round

you only really need to swap the rear wheels side to side as these are normally the only 2 that get uneven wear, this is due to the reduction in drive to the rear wheels.

while on the subject of tyres this stepping affect can cause a worn bearing noise in the cabin while driving so before you think you have a shot wheel bearing check the condition of your tyres
