I need to replace all four tyres on my 95 V8 Discovery. At the moment they
are 235's on standard LR ally wheels. What size (width) can I go up to? The
tyres I will buy will be BFG all terrain T/A, anyone know the best place to
get them ?

Thanks

Richard

Just fitted 245s - no problems at all.

Hi Richard,

are you a member of the Discovery Owners Club?

Would recommend joining, as there are discounts to be had.

I've just made use of the discount at e-tyres (www.etyres.co.uk) and got a
set of 235/70/R16's with a 5% discount.

not much benefit in going wider than 235. 235/70 fit OK, obviously. If you
go much bigger on the diameter you'll have bodywork issues. Much more width
is mostly pose value, TBH - my series III 109 on 7.50 radials probably
performs better off road than the 110 used to on 10.5" wide ones. You do
get a bit more flotation on soft stuff, but the range of terrain where this
makes a meaningful difference is fairly narrow - If you got to 255 width
(say a 255/65 or something) then on softish ground it'll sink in a bit less.
On really soft ground it'll sink anyway, and on harder stuff you'll get less
bite due to the reduced ground pressure.

Austin Shackles. www.ddol-las.net my opinions are just that
Once, when the secrets of science were the jealously guarded property of
a small priesthood, the common man had no hope of mastering their arcane
complexities. Years of study in musty classrooms were prerequisite to
obtaining even a dim, incoherent knowledge of science.
Today, all that has changed: a dim, incoherent knowledge of science is
available to anyone. - Tom Weller, Science Made Stupid, 1986
