I've got a HSE TD4 with 17" Trek Alloys for which I need to buy 4 new tyres.

I want a tyre that's grippy but quiet on road as this will constitute 95% of my journeys but I don't want something that's totally useless off tarmac.

What have you got and what can anyone recommend? Also what is the minimum load rating I need for a 4 x 4 or will tyres for 'normal' cars be okay?

As you are aware 225/55R17 are a tricky size to find suitable tyres for, plenty designed for cars but not many for a 4x4.
Just fitted a set of five Hankook Ventus RH06 to my wife's TD4 and they seem very good. They grip in wet & dry weather at least as good as the Michelin's they replaced and the ride is much better & quieter, can't tell about snow & ice yet but I can't imagine for one minute that they will leave the vehicle floundering. As for off-road I don't really care as my wife never touches as much as a blade of grass in it (got the 90 for that) so it will never be an issue but once again I can't imagine they are any worse than other road-baised 4x4 tyres. Only time will tell if the wear rates are as good (50K miles out of the Synchrone's).
Cost was £123 each all in so a lot cheaper than replacing with another set of Michelin's. You can get them a bit cheaper buying the tyre only but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of finding someone to swop them over for less than the all-in price and then having to load five tyres into the back of the car.
