Tyres - Winter on the way

My P38 is just about due new tyres, they are currently what I would call road tyres.

I live in a rural area which is high enough to get plenty of snow when it comes down.

Earlier in the year when we got the last decent snowfall, I was heading home along a very dark lane with snow going sideways and giving me just a few feet of view. All of a sudden there was a woman walking towards me in the middle of the road and I had to swerve to avoid her!!! The front O/S wheel went into the soft verge and I could not get out, I tried both low and high range, forwards, backwards, rocking, low power, plenty of power......
The lady had got stuck further down the lane so I borrowed a tractor from my neighbour and got us both out.
Had I had more appropriate tyres, I would probably have been able to get out myself as the soft verge wasn't that low - I was very disappointed in my P38 as it can be very good in the wet stuff.

I drive a 52 mile round trip each day on a mix of country lanes and motorway.

I want some tyres that will have good grip in the snow but behave well on the tarmac.

What would you suggest?

And where would you buy them?

I do not know if they are available in your country, but if possible you can look at Toyo Observe GSi-5.
 
General Grabber AT2's. I've been using them for 6 years now and I can not fault them in any way. Great on the road, dry or wet, snow, sand and even mud. Not much noise with them either.

General Grabbers are an all terrain tyre. Mine seem to work well in muddy fields getting horse box around but aren't to noisy on tarmac. Seem to grip well in the wet. I can't give you any idea on wear rates and I think they'd be no good for extreme off roading but as an all round tyre it works for what I want it for. As from where you get them I haven't a clue of a supplier local to you but if you want to get them on line and then get a friendly garage to jump your hoops one of the cheapest places is Cheap Tyres Discount Tyres Buy Tyres Online & Japanese Import Car Parts Spares Tuning Performance Servicing Accessories

Getting back to the Grabbers, here's a link to their data sheet: Grabber AT2 Data PDF

I will say one thing, don't worry about their 60,000 mile warranty, I've done well over that and they are still over the half-way mark. As for off-roading, I don't do any off that extreme rock climbing stuff, but I do go a bit crazy ever now and again and these things simply take it in their stride. By the way, great on grass.

I would suggest cooper discovery m+s , I´ve had cooper tyres on my disco,rr,and defender for years ,a ndI think they´re great , had bfg on my hcpu , but can´t say I was impressed over how long they lasted .

General Grabbers all day long.
I had At2 on the p38 on 16" wheels...super.
AT2 no longer available so AT 18" on the L322.

Try 225 - 55 - 18
and why do you want tyres rated at 186mph? (Y)
Ratings of V and H are available in that size or you could go a little wider.
I'm running 255 - 55 - 18 V Grabbers, excellent off-road and very acceptable road noise.
 
According to their website, mytyres.co.uk, At2 available in 18 but, they've gone up since I got mine last year now at £151.

Confusingly the AT replaced the AT2, bloody good tyres couldn't get stuck in deep snow no matter how stupidly I drove. 25k miles so far and they still look like new.
 
Sorry guys, just noticed my "Typo", it should read 255 55 18

The speed rating is what is on the tyres already, 186 MPH is probably a little excessive, perhaps the last owner had delusions about the top speed achievable!

I will have a loo for the AT version, I had assumed that the AT2 was the more recent version too!
