Tyres - leave or change (newbie ?)

Hi folks ,

Turns out our recently acquired Freelander of Y reg vintage has 195/80R15 96 S Tyres---->
Front: Goodyear Wrangler HP All Weather
Rear: Zettex Rigger A/T

The rears look more the business for current weather conditon (snow/slush/mud), the fronts less so.....any views comment before I shell out (rightly or wrongly:doh on more mud/snow biased tyres....

Ideally you should change all 4 at the same time, but if you don't Just makesure the new tyres are exactly the same size, and don't just go by the sizes on the side of the tyre, and if there is a small difference (upto 5mm) put the larger ones on the rear. Mismatched tyres can requiring the VCU to have to slip too much, resulting in damaged IRD and rear diff. Once you have tyres fitted, drive the car for a few miles then touch the VCU, if its warm you need to match the tyres up otherwise you will be in for a big bill.

accepted wisdom says
put new tyres on rear -used rears on front

the owners manual and the haynes manual say to change all 4 tyres at the same time or only fit new ones to the rear

If decent tread why change any of them? The fronts you have are respected.

Can anyone tell me if BFG A/Ts would do as a winter tyre?
I imagine they would be fine for snow, but otherwise I wouldn't know - may be better with a "proper" winter tyre.
