a couple of months ago i decieded to put some decent tyres on the back of my freelander they are Micheline latitudes , i had syncrones on the front , and being as i had decent ones on the front i thought it was all OK as i had the new ones on the back. Until I got a very slight vibration between 50 and 70 mph . so I went upto my local main dealer and ask why the vibration , he came out and looked around ,then he said omg you got Latitudes on the back and syncrones on the front , i said yes they are the same size , and he told me off ,it is the depth of the tyre walls that make the difference , so i went to my tyre dealer and got another 2 new latitudes on and WOW! what a difference in the car , a lot smoother and i seem to be getting more mpg , now you lot on here say i should have done a search and yes i should have . i did not realise that micheline had put out a warning not to have them mixed and my local dealer told me that , well i said they were better than the crap you put on the back ,sunny's a car tyre which were directional as well ,
and so after all this I have been very lucky as my friend has been ill and i have not taken him to see his other friend which is 200 mile a fortnight and i have not been well so not been out much, so what could have been a disaster with the vcu and ird ect: was not ,and to top it all i got a voucher from Micheline for £50 worth of fuel becuse they were the 17 ins tyres and lower than the 17 ins you get £25

fyi, it is the rolling diameter of the wheel being out of tolerance bounds that is the issue. You'd think that a 225/50/r17 tyre would be the same size as another 225/50/r17, regardless of manufacturer or model. But, they can be quite different.

So if one (the one being me) wasn't wanting to knacker up things in the 4x4 drivetrain, what should one look out for? Physically measure the tyre wall? Make sure all tyres are symmetrical or directional? Only ever driven cars and banged on any old tyre so don't really know much about 4x4 tyres.

I'm not a freelander expert, but make sure they are all the same make/model. Always stick new ones on the rear.

if you can't get the same make/model again.. get 4 new. This is more to do with the freelanders vcu btw.

yes they did . i told them what was on the front of the car and they even looked , and they deal with micheline more than anything else being only half a mile from the factory . when i did go back second time and asked them for the other two ,they said oh you should not mix them di we not tell you, needless to say i will not be going there ever again . on my old freelander i had goodyear wranglers all the way around , and even left 4 new ones on i must be daft or what.

Every other car on the road manages to cope with different age/ state of wear/ brand tyres on but a freelander can't ?

i'm not an expert, but it seems to be something to do with the vcu on the f1.. someone more knowledgeable will hopefully pop along. I think it makes it overwork if it varies by like 6mm.

Well the turning circle of the rear axle is much much less than the front and definately more than 6mm difference

like i say, i'm not that clued up on the freelander.. but this might make more sense, second from last huge paragraph Symptoms - Bell Engineering

seems it's a guy from on here austin .. this has probably been mentioned umpteen times on here before.. we should really have a search :D
