Had my Defender MOT'd yesterday and although it passed :) I was told my recently new 265 x 16 Cooper STT tyres were a technical failure as they foul the radius arm (LHS only). Really chunky tread down the sidewalks do it.
Defenders have no backlock adjustment so either wheel spacers or kinked arms?
I went for 265 & not 285 cos I don't really like wheel spacers (steering kick back/stud & hub loading) but looks like I'm stuck now, or rely on pass next year as we'll?
 
Ah! The MOT garage said there are no locks tops to adjust!!!
This is my first Defender bought in Nov last, so getting used to it slowly.
I'll get to it straight away!

This may help - I wouldn't try measuring it, just tweak the nuts until the tyres don't rub, but you maximise what steering lock you have.

But I know people with Defenders where the tyres have rubbed for years and also I'm surprised the garage couldn't have helped you.

I would suggest that you get someone to carefully turn the steering wheel for you whilst you do the lock stop bolt adjustments - it's quite easy to go mad thinking that you need to move the bolts in or out a long way. You can get to a position where you have placed the bolt in an incorrect position and the action of the steering will readily bend the bolts without you noticing it. So with an assistant you can lie underneath and watch what's going on.
 
Thanks guys. Plus gas needed as you suggested, freed lock nut and only needed half turn to give 30+\- clearance to rad arm with asst (wives ARE useful) leaning lightly on full lock.
