Tyres for my 2a

I'm looking for some tyres for my 2a and was wondering if I should get two sets, one for on road and one for off, or should I get some all terrain tyres, any thought's?

P.S. Like the look and size of michelin XL 9.00 x 16 but don't know how they perform.

I've got Michelin XL 9.00x16 of my Series III 88". They perform fantastically, BUT you'll need quite a few serious modifications to get them on.

sorry to (sort of) hijack the thread. but I would love to know what the best size/width of tire to use for my series 3 88" (for road use, as I have an abundance of spare offroad tires and wheels for it)

radials are preferable, and im after the best on road handling (sealed roads of course)

its currently on some offroad type 700/16's

7.50/r16, they are the equivilent to 265/75r16 or 235/85r16 try finding some lwb rims as they are wider (7.5j as opposed to 6.5j) (more tyre choice).
as for tyres, firestone s.a.ts if you can find them, avon rangers or deestone extra grips, they all look right on a series.
the s.a.ts are commonly known as mudpluggers and are mud biased tyres, the avons are all terain type tyres and the deestones are in the middle but quit mud biased

I think i'll get the XL's for off roading, just need some road tyres now.

How much do the XL's cost along with rims?

Michelin XL's cost from between £50-£80 +VAT each depending on how worn they are. I went for the ones at £60 each, almost new. The £80 ones are pretty much totally unworn.
Fitted on Snatch Land Rover rims, which are 6.5J x 16 tubeless. They were £20 +VAT each.

Bear in mind if you do go for the 9.00 x 16 you'll be cutting bodywork and front bumper, plus you'll need extended bumpstops and 1 Ton Shackles. It makes it look a bit stupid if you fit normal size tyres on it afterwards.

If you go for the snatch rims from Vass 6.5J x 16 they're tubeless, so going for radials is a lot easier. They look exactly the same as normal Series wheels, just wider, like the forward control rims.

just incase you are interested i have a set of 4 recip trial mud tyres 235/70/16 just about to go on ebay

How do the michelins handle on the road? Like in the wet and around corners.

In the dry pretty well. In the wet I slow down a lot.
A Series Land Rover ain't no Go-Kart, I take corners pretty steady, tend to go slow in, fast out.

Definitely have to get some road tyres then as the whole reason for fitting a 300tdi was to go faster!

No point in going faster if you can't slow down faster. 900's are seriously heavy tyres and have an awful lot of inertia. Your 2a brakes will struggle to slow them down once they're spinning. Mine is a late Series 3, so 11" front brakes and dual line servo brakes. it still takes some stopping and keeping the brakes in top order is essential or you're going to die.

We do have LWB brakes with a servo but i'm not sure they stop too well

Looks like you've done some body mods already. One thing I notice is your spare on the back door. You can forget hanging a 900 there, it'll have to go on a swing away or inside.

Actually these mods were done when we bought the Land Rover.
