Tyre Widths

Good Afternoon Hippo gurus,

I’m sure like everything else I ask it’s been ‘done to death’ but half the time I don’t have the time to find the exact answer I need unfortunately

I’ve been looking to change for larger tyres for general off roading in my standard Freelander 1 (pre-facelift) with 16inch wheels and wasnt sure what I can fit. Get the idea 215/75/16 will fit but would any wider ones such as 225/75/16 fit?

On standard wheels you can run 225/75/16 or 235/70/16 tyres. I've ran both, I've got a picture of my hippo on its 225/75/16 I'll dig out in a minute, and I've also ran it on the 235's. My 225/75/16 wheels are Kumho KL-71 mud tyres, the wheels I've got the 235/70/16 fitted to have BFG All terrains on them.

These are a couple of pics showing the hippo at my house, it does have a 2" lift kit on it in these pictures, butthat doesnt affect the fittment of bigger tyres as thelift kit sits between the turret and the suspension topmount. The limiting factor for wheels and tyre choices on freelanders is the suspension topmounts, whereby as the tyres get bigger, the tops of the tyres get closer to the underneath of the spring seat on the shock absorber.

I always looked at the lift kits but how much work other than installing the blocks on the suspension is it?
