Hi all. Seeking some help on a tyre size problem I'm having. Just got a second hand 1999 Freelander 2.0l diesel and looking to replace the worn tyres. Web research recommends 225/55 R17 boots, but I am having trouble finding anything suitable. I live in Barbados, so selection s more limited than in most place and the only tyres of this size I have found are Michellin Primacy's at a whopping 250 pounds each!!! Tings aint cheap in B'dos. The only reasonable tyres I have found are 235/65 R17, but I am concerned there may not be sufficient clearence. Any advice? What are the largest tyres I can get away with, as selection increases dramatically once I get above 235/55 R17. Thanks for any help.

I am assuming that you have 17" alloys?
I have looked at clearances for snow chains on this size wheel and standard tyre size!! Bear with me on this - I know it ain't snowing where you are
"Definitely Can't put standard chains on 17" alloys with 255-55-17's, run your hand around the inside of the tyre at the top.
It won't go past the steering arm or strut (only <10mm clearance) Likely you'll damage vital parts."
Same will apply if you are fitting much wider tyres.

I know some on here have fitted larger tyres on 17" rims - maybe someone will give you some first hand experiences ??

This probably doesn't help you as you say that you can't locate 225/55 tyres in Barbados, but I've just got my car back from its MOT & it's had three Kuhmo 225/55 ZR17 97W KH11 Ecsta X3 tyres fitted for £274 all in. 7 mm tread depth to cope with the snow we've been treated to over here. Look OK, too. Sorted.
You've got the sun, the sea & the cricket. We've got cheap tyres. Life's full of compromises (but I think you might have the best deal!).

odd size, u should have 195/15s on that model, have the wheels been changed? also rather than using a web recommended size, read the side wall of your tyres as the size will be written on them
may be more beneficial to buy the tyres abroad and have them shipped directly to you,
