I'll cut to the point...

Will this combination work??

D1 300TDi
+2" liftkit
+2" arches
33/12.50R15 KL71 on 8x15 Modulars?

Its the wheels/tyres i'm looking at buying, I was looking at 265 Insa ST's but I have a bigger budget now and I think the Special Tracks would be wasted really.....Disco's to be used 75% green lanes and P&P days with the very occasional local journey.

Would it be that they were too wide or too tall?

depends on what stiffness springs you have and how much of your arches you willing to remove

i wouldnt want to go any bigger than 32's on a disco otherwise you will need a big lift to get any articulation, it will ruin the gear ratios and snap half shafts all the time

Erm.....erm...erm....well if it helps it has a ProComp 2" lift kit, 2" Paddocks arches with the metal arches cut out.

Im looking to buy some tyres/wheels soon and would rather buy decent ones now than buy something and find them rubbish offroad! Heard lots good about KL71's, in particular their offroad performance and how they wear. I automatically assumed biggest is best but it seems like thet may not be the case, dont want to be getting stuck every 5 minutes

What would you recommend? Good offroad performance is the main agenda, would like something that looks rather smart too!!

Say £600 budget?

I realise that a lot of threads have been put up about this kind of thing (and the inevitable "have you searched" question gets asked), but everybody's situation is different depending on what they want. Yes I've searched, found nothing relating to exactly what I need, and am holding back on purchases until I hear something useful.

Seeing as the OP has asked and expected these types of answers, I want to know whether a 2" heavy duty spring and shocker upgrade (with minimal trimming of rear quarter guards), is possible with 245/75R16 Goodyear MTR's. It's for a tourer, not a full-articulation beast btw. Each setup has its own specific issues as we know, so being a 'smartarse' with a predictable generic answer isn't useful...I give honest and experienced answers where possible, and I speak on behalf of others when I say that it's not much to ask of the same in return.

I share everything I can in as much depth as possible, hi-res pics, got a lot of mech experience, etc, and as they say...sharing's caring.

Here's a good example of quality over sizing...my mate GQ Patrol fitted with Koni shockers, King Springs, and 31" GY MTR's. It was built up purely as a tourer with good gear, not a plough! I took the video footage. This bog-hole had just been chewed out by a few Land Cruisers running cheap 35" muddies, and were waiting around to give him sh*t when he needed snatching!

bigger is not always best, with such large wheels you will lose power to the wheels and may find some sections harder due to not having enough power to turn the wheels when they are axle deep in mud

Insa Turbo special tracks seem to be the tyre of choice for most challenge trucks so if it was going offroad most of the time these would seem like a good choice

265/75 is the best of both worlds for a 2 inch lifted disco IMHO

So going back to those KL71s that I originally mentioned, if I was to add +2" shocks and shock droppers would that counteract the articulation lost by the tyres? I'm not looking to have extreme articulation as its not a comp truck but it would be nice to know that it has a little more should I need it....I dont plan on climbing Mt.Everest and as mentioned its only going to be used for greenlaning and some pay and play days. I cant go too mad in terms of driving as i'll have my two little monsters with me lol

I did originally look at 265's and 30mm spacers to fill the arches and make a wider track but from my car modification days I know spacers have a reputation of being unsafe and also I dislike their appetite for wheelbearings! Wider wheels and tyres seems like the safest bet all round in my eyes.

you could get 2in shock droppers aswell but that means you will need +4 inch brake lines, and dislocation cones
just remember that for one wheel to drop lower the opposite wheel needs to go right up into the wheel arch

also as you pointed out spacers will break things - oversized tyres will snap half shafts and CV's a lot more often and im sure your kids will not be happy when you break down all the time
