Hi,
I have a 1999 TD5 that currently has Pirelli Scorpion ST 255/55/18 fitted.
What i want to know is what other sizes can i fit that will not upset the performance of the car.
For example, can i fit 255/55/19 or 255/60/18.
I know what each thing means on the tyre, but that doesn't really help in chosing what wheels/tyres i can fit.
As i understand it, these disco's came fitted with 16inch wheels as standard, s they have been upgraded in the past i should imagine?

Regards, Colin

Depends what you mean by 'upset the performance' .. for me you've already upset it by having larger rims and road oriented tyres ...

Trouble is, if you checked, most people on here are off-roaders or green-laners and probably don't see 18" or 19" rims as an upgrade .. I certainly don't, and so don't have a lot of experience of these sizes of tyre. In my view they detract from the looks and do nothing for the vehicles off-road capability.

So it's mostly down to you to be a trail-blazer. Do the maths, get a circumference, diameter and tyre width, wheel size, wheel offset, rim type and width you have or need and then have a look at the tyre chart at the top of the Disco forum/thread and do the same for a few of the tyres in the chart, compare the two, then it's make your mind up time if you need to chop bodywork or alter lockstops etc

Have fun ... ;)

I brought this Discovery as a "road car" that is capable of pulling a horsebox and caravan. Therefore, it is primarily used on road. If this upsets certain people that it should not be used as such then they should look on the road and see how many there are of these on there. I know three other "disco" drivers and all of them brought them for thier towing capabilities firstly, and there off road performance secondly.

Penguin, i bort mine to chuck it down hills, an make it muddy, tis what a landy is for pal...............now pulling donkeys in a box?? not my thing so i dont know, but dont you need a car with loads of torque, like a viper?? discosa are good but wasted as "road" cars only, get it propa muddy sometime, use your low range, have some fun in it :D

For towing, 'specially heavy trailers like horse-boxes, it's not really worth fitting larger diameter wheels/tyres as it'll rob some performance. Larger tyres, raise the gearing and the engine isn't renowned to be a powerful beast!! I know 'cos I have larger tyres (31" on 15" rims) tow a caravan and horse-box and have up-rated the engine to suit.

... and I never said it shouldn't be used as such ... Read my post properly before you get on your high horse, my dig was at the 19" rims and their unsuitability for off-roading, which is where the majority of this forums knowledge is based. You using a Disco purely on-road doesn't upset me in the slightest, i was trying to help you.

As I said, do the maths, work out gearing changes etc and take your choice. Unless someone else pops up and has the in-depth knowledge of the rims/tyres you want for the application you want ... but I think you might have to wait a while ...

PS you and they didn't 'brought' the Discos, you bought them ... ;)

ok, cos obv i need to do something about my badly needing a change road tyres, but i really like the idea of muds, but its more practicalto go with ats, at the moment im thinking of sticxking ATs on my standard wheel, not hugley expensive an then going all out on some nice odulars an nice Muds, but i dont know what to do first :(

These are my third set of AT's ... I change them at ~25000, sell the old set on ebay with 8mm or more tread left, last set at £250!!!

... makes up for them being £100 a corner ... ;)

If we had another road/tow car I'd get MT's ... but even with At's I only get stuck when the axles or chassis have bottomed out in stupidly deep ruts, which would happen with MT's as well I reckon ... ;)

Okay Colin, so to try and answer your question.

Disco 2 came as std with either 235/70/16 or 255/55/18.

If you want to know what effect different tyres sizes will have on your vehicle, use the comparator linked below. Just an observation, if towing is a high priority for you, might I suggest that you stick to std dimension tyres otherwise you will upset the gearing and make towing more difficult.

I work with landrovers as my job and i have driven many discovery 2's and they are by far best on 16'' wheels the ones with 18'' wheels are no where near as nice a ride on the road! They did come with either 16 inch wheels or 18 inch wheels from the factory. personally if i was going to change my wheel/tyre size from 18'' i would not be going larger. stick a set of 265/75/16s on.

If you move away from the std size of 255/55/18, to your suggested size on a 16" rim of 265/75/16, then you will INCREASE the size of the combined wheel/tyre package by 9%, thereby affecting the speedometer, mileometer and gearing. You will of course have more sidewall thus more suspension within the tyre, but you will also have more flex, therefore a less precise reaction to steering inputs.

This change will also invalidate your insurance (due to undeclared non standard fitments) in the case of an accident and ensuing insurance claim, thereby rendering your vehicle illegal.

Good advice, I'll be sure to take advantage of your suggestions in the future - NOT !!!!!

You work with Landrovers doing what, valetting them??

Yes increasing the suspension thus causing a smoother ride brainbox. Is it to complicated to tell your insurer you have fitted a different size tyres to your veichle. are you aware where the discovery 2 picks up its speed signal biglad?? I dont understand why you have such a problem with what i have written in my post Yes i does increase the overall size buy 9 percent. but their is more give in the sidewall creating a smoother ride not a hudge difference in control of the vehicle. and you also end up with a lager size witch is what the original post was about increasing the size of the wheel/tyre im sure im right in saying fitting a 265/75/16 would increase the size and also benefit from a better ride tell me im wrong. seems to me this forum has changed.
