And no that's not beer sipping it's tyre siping...

Has anyone Siped their tyres for better mud & snow performance? This is the process of putting many small lateral cuts across the tread blocks to give improved traction on ice, snow and mud.

I'm interested in any experiences from the forum members and possible source for the hot knife required to do this. here is an article from the USA on it :-

Toyota Tech: Siping Tires

Nope, but when I raced sidecar we used to get slicks and cut them for wets and intermediates.
Have a chat with a tyre manufacturer/distributor (not shop) and see what they say.

When i did motorcycle trials we used to run at 4psi to get better mud grip, security bolts required on the bead though. also we would scrap tyres once the sharpness came off the leading edge of the tread, you could turn them round and run them backwards to get double the life too...

I recut some old landy tyres last summer. I just cut half of the rubber depth out that was left, still left about 4mm before the cords. My mate ran em on his 90 for about 4 months doing 300 miles a week.:)
Have a tyre cutter/regroover left from my old trucking days when I used to recut my own tyres.

it is technically illegal to regrove tyres in the UK, unless they are over a certain size, which is about bus size.

As for the siping, i don't know.

Bollix I had a set of avon summat or others on the 110 and they had it written on the sidewall That you could regroove em.

Edit just found this

It is legally acceptable to re-groove tyres for the following vehicles as long as the original tyres were suitable for regrooving:

* most trucks, goods vehicles and PSVs over 2 ½ tons unladen weight
* all electrically propelled goods vehicles
* all but the smallest trailers

So it probably was a bit dodgy on the 110 but they was commercial tyres and regrooveable.
