Tyre Pressures - Way Off

Hi.

Have owned my 52 Freelander TD4 5 door for a few months now, and noticed that one of the back tyres seemed a little low. Have just taken it to the service station to inflate the tyre and realised the back tyres where way down at 18psi each, however the front tyres seem way over inflated at 38psi each. I have inflated the rear tyres to 28psi (in between the normal load and full load recommended pressures as I often carry a half loaded car) and have for now left the front tyres at 38 as the car isnt going to be used for the rest of the day.

Do those front tyres seem way overinflated, what kind of pressures are everyone else running.

I put 30psi all round..

LR revised tyre pressures a few times and recommend as above, 30psi, regardless of load or even towing.
Personally I prefer to increase the rears to 36psi when towing the caravan as it takes away some of the movement in the sidewall and gives me better stability.

38 in the front is a bit high. Truth is, even for identical vehicles, there seems to be some difference of opinion as to what pressure is best, and it's more trial and error. Personally, mine seem best at about 34, running Michelin Latitudes, but mine is a commercial, with a fair amount in the back, and a fat b*stard in the driver seat.

There is a test you can do with a piece of chalk. You'll have to do a search, but essentially, find an empty car park on a dry day. Draw a line on each tyre from inside to out in a straight line.

Then drive forward one revolution of the wheel and look at the marks. If it is a complete line the same width as the tyre, they're about right with the maximum amount of tread in contact with the road. If only the outer edges show, then they're too soft, if only the middle shows then they're too hard.
