Tyre Help

Nothing serious and nothing which need working right now.

something i been looking around and can not find any distinctive information.

its just one of them things on a car , if you believe the manufacturer - they telling you one thing, and most likely the most expensive one - people another.

so, i have at the moment 255 60 r18 tyres on alloys.
i been looking for other wheels but i dont want 21 rims and i am not sure if i go for 16s.
17 and so are to expensive, even second hand. dont even know if the fit straight on.

i do know the disco 2 16s fit straight on.

but - is not only about the rims. i can pick some 16 rims for near to nothing of marketplace.

i have the 18s and i do like the style of the looks and driving it around even in high winds , water and grass they just going.

now here comes the question - can i put on those rims 265 or even 275 50 or 60 on.
the reason i am asking - they about 40 pound cheaper to buy as the 255.
and if i can save penny's its a bonus.
just not sure if the would suit without problems. i cant find any information regarding the rims i have on neither what sizes would fit.
i do know i cant go any higher as 60 because they would hit the arches by turning the wheels.

and my first idea putting AT Tyres on is out the window when i seen the Price Options for it. plus the fact of running them on the 18s need lifting the car. - i dont want to go there.

I am sure someone can give some insight information to this.

265 275 on which rim size? 16" or 18"
I run the 255/65/16's in mine with the general at3's. No stability issues no cutting catching or weel arch issues either. Larger rim finer tyre. If your doing any offroading at all it thinking about it the 16's in my experience are the best for ultimate rim protection! Watch it @holidaychicken, @tomcat59alan.... But if you like the 18's then stick to a tyre that best suits your needs. Any cross matching unfortunately can lead to issues that were never meant to be dealt with.
My tyres do 50/50 on and off the road so are justified. Plenty of our fellow bus drivers use nexen for pure on road.
I'm looking at hankook dynapro at2 but I've yet to find anyone who can give an opinion. Take your time and keep it simple.

sorry. 265 r18 or any other above 255.
i checked prices and tbf going for whats on 265 60 18 they the most expensive one on choice.
265 r18 or even 275 r18 you save about 19 to 45 pound per tyre although they wider
but not sure if the range rover like the wider ones or give problems with the arches ?

i dont think i want to go for 235 or 225 on the heavy vehicle.

i dont mind going down from 255 60 18 to 50 or 45 if they a cheaper option.
i like to keep the 18 alloys. saves hassle about ending up with some alloy i flog with loss as i dont like the hassle of endless question answering. plus they look good on the range rover/

AT Tyres was an original plan for winter and rubbish roads around the peak and stuff. not a necessity in my opinion as i have no intention going that so called greenlaning where you scratch your car to death or permanent breaking stuff for the fun of others on your expenses.

occasionally i may go on dirt and grass but not permanent as i rather like a clean car as a dirty workhorse kind of dump. lol.

i looked at the 16 s but decent wide tyres are again - over the odd on price. i just cant satisfy a 125 to 160 pound per tyre knowing they can pick something up beyond repair and then need another which may comes to a higher price as they always fast in changing the value.


i only put twice in my whole life brand new tyres on a vehicle and ended up with a nail in less then 2 days just to pay out for another.

so i am very careful on choice and price.
usual i go for part worn but with the law changing there hardly any about anymore.

I like my 16s.

Don’t worry about going down a lane or grass P38 would handle that on bald tyres. Road tyres are fine for most places.

Don't forget the difference in profile changes your speedo reading also and could end up in a fine or being beeped at for not being quick enough. 255/65/16 as you know the 65 is a percentage of the tyres width. So if you get a wider tyre with a lesser percentage it could still be close to the originals dimensions. Here in France we have to fit like for like according to the vehicle manufacturers original specifications. I have the dhse so i have to fit the 255's, the 235's are indeed around 20-30€ cheaper but my rims are deemed too wide for them.

Yes I know. Yes France is close to Germany. Lol.

Not really want to go for 235 or so. Dont think the rims would suit them.
Is anyone running 265 on 18 rims?

And yes. I towed a van out of a field yesterday. On road tyres. Lol

16s depend I they are the 7 or 8J

This is interesting, I checked and found this

which implies that as long as the tyre matches for dimensions, load and speed you can put any tyre you want on, as long as you put the same make on both ends of an axle.
My interest being that we spend 1/2 the year in France and have already come across this type of con being perpetrated.
You have to be able to read French quite quickly and be prepared to delve a bit deep but there it is, the truth, they cannot make you buy any specific make of tyre.
Suppose the original tyre manufacturer went bust?

Not specific make but specific dimensions according to landrovers design.
This was made clear to me at the c.t. Station and not a tyre shop.
I've never come across a tyre scam like that here. Not in 15yrs, it may just be your end of the onion

When you said "like for like" i thought you meant exactly like for like, i.e. down to original manufacturer of the tyre.
If not then we are singing from the same hymn sheet and Discos for instance can fit two tyre types of slightly different spec as each type is there in the handbook for all to see.
So your end of the the onion is no different to ours then!
But wifey did get an earful when she tried to buy a spare for her Corsa a while back. She got away with it but they weren't happy!

I have a problem here in Portugal every inspection with my Fiesta Courior van..livrette lists tyre sizes allowed but they dont make the ones fitted in the speed rating listed on livrete for a commercial, because they are wider they are deemed ok but I have to point this out everytime...

Sorry but in all my life I have never and would never ever contemplate putting a second hand tyre on my vehicle. Especially not a two ton one that can travel quite quickly

The profile should be 55 on 18s or the speedo will be out.

Don't know about 16s but, 255/55/18 which is the correct size for these beasts don't come cheap, I had GG At2s on mine £134 each back in 2012 from MYTYRES
good tyres BTW but like I said not cheap.

New take offs are second hand...a good quality used can be better than a cheap unknown brand from asia...unused spares from write offs are another source...

Same hym sheet yes.
They do like to sell a pair of tyres at once and I can see why they weren't happy about selling a single.

Yep, France is a big place!
Haven't we discussed this before? Or is it with some other member who also lives in the Charente? I did mention having gone there for a holiday once, the Marais, and La Rochelle, etc, etc. We stayed in a converted windmill, which was interesting! Many moons ago. Afore tinternet!
