can anyone advise me as to what size mud terrain off-road tyre I can fit to my discovery series 2 td5. I currently have 225/75/16 on and need to raise the diffs higher but am unsure what size tyre wall I can fit. It's fitted with a winch and steel bumper and has a 2" suspension lift kit. Thanks.

You want bigger ones than you currently have. Tyre sizes differ slightly between brands, so a search through the forum should show some existing setups.

Well i've been told i could get away with 245/85/16 without doing any fettling, there just seems an awful lot of space between the tyre and any point of the wheel arch and the tyre suppliers around here either don't want to help or genuinely don't have a clue.

I suspect they don't want to make a recommendation in case it's wrong, and Joe Bloggs tyres wont want to flog you anything that deviates from standard.
245 85 is quite a size. If you've lifted it 2" you would think that you could get a 4" taller Tyre in the gap. There are many variables with different manufacturers springs put with different manufacturers tyres and different wheels. Personally I'd measure my tyres to ensure they're the size they say they are. Research the tyres you want and check there tolerance to indicated size. Go no cross axle your landy somewhere so you can measure where current tyres sit then get the calculator out. Reduces the trial and error and you don't want to be spending out £££ on new tyres just to find they don't fit.
Check the speed rating is suitable for your vehicle also.
