Good day to you all.

At the end of March the P38 was laid up for the Spring / Summer season and the MG ZT put into service. Before the lay up I had two minor problems which although annoying, didn't prevent me from using it.

1. Sometimes the engine was reluctant to rev over 3000 rpm and using kickdown was best avoided.

2. Auto gear changes were not as they were, 1st to 2nd ok, 2nd to third ok, but not as smooth as they should be, 3rd to 4th would not happen unless I released the throttle pedal completely or, the vehicle reached a tad over 50 mph, then it changed and the torque converter lock up would take place. Effectively I was missing 4th gear.
I decided to investigate some time during the lay up, which was this week. Nothing like leaving things to the last minute.

Started it up after standing 6 months and all seamed ok until I touched the throttle. Struggled to get to 2000 rpm and no power whatsoever. Out with the Nanocom Evo and ran dignostics, no recorded missfires but it showed a fault on the left bank of cylinders (can't remember exactly what it said) and the MAF readings were low, 15 at idle. Replaced the MAF with a genuine Bosch unit and it now reved up to the limiter, reset adaptive values and went for a test run and it's flying, sorted.

To my great delight, the gear changes are now back to normal and as smooth as silk. Reset gearbox adaptive values for completeness. I guess the gearbox ECU was receiving low torque reading from the engine ECU and trying to adapt accordingly. I'm a happy chappy until the next problem rears it's ugly head. :):):)

Sorry for the long post but, I hope it will help someone else out there.

Going to try this Tony2. Just getting mine on the road for winter after being stood for 6 months. She's been put through a heat cycle every week but not driven any distance.

3rd to 4th is a problem. Won't shift when accelerating hard in normal or Sport mode. Hits 40000 rpm and tries but won't engage. Ease off (half the peddle travel) and she'll slip in. Hope this fix will sort it! How much was the Bosch unit out of interest?

Hi foz67.
I take it you have the Thor V8 engine.
After fitting the new MAF the adaptive settings for engine and gearbox should be reset to be most effective.

Got it from Island 4x4.
Genuine Bosch £120 including VAT and delivery.
Don't be tempted to go aftermarket, lots of reports of them failing or not working correctly.
