just wonder if anyone has had similar , on Wednesday went to pick daughter up from uni and on the why back travelling down the a3 the battery light came on , carried on driving until one by one every thing failed. And came to a halt at the side of the road, called breakdown and they turned up jump stared me but when they checked the battery whilst running only getting 11.8 v so no charge coming from alternator. Got car recovered to garage and they tested the battery and alternator and said alternator was not giving out any charge. they replace alternator with new bosh alternator . tested after and alternator was giving out 14,49v when running so picked up car and gave it a quick 20m run to recharge the battery, which was reading 13.5 when car was switched of. Took the car on another run today and about 70miles later the battery light comes up again luckily I was only a few miles away from the garage when straight down there and the checked the alternator , which had failed , no voltage what so ever. they have said they will replace the alternator free of charge as it appears to have failed for no reason's ,did have a side light bulb warning come up after the alternator failed . I took this out replaced bulb and all is well with the light. any one else had some thing similar if so is there any thing obvious I am missing or have I just been very unlucky ps forgot to mention I have a range rover 2005 vogue td6

Just thought I'd post an update. Had another new alternator fitted under warranty got the car back and all seems to be going well have taken it out for a short 25m run with no problems. Have got to do about 150 on Friday so fingers crossed

Sounds like just a coincidence that the replacement alternator was duff. The quality of car parts these days seems to be dreadful, I had 2 new solenoid a before I got a good one.

I suspect many places buy in bulk with a lower price but no returns policy. Over the years the manufacturers have let the standard slip to keep the price low but there are more defects. Because of the no returns the vendor takes the hit - and the punter who wastes time and energy taking duff parts back and constantly dissembling and reassembling their vehicle.

Well thought I would post an update new alternator fitted under warranty has now covered just over 2000 miles and seems to be working fine. Looks as if it was just ad luck and I got a dodgy brand new bosh unit..

A quick tip if this happens again with a new alternator.

Give the back of the alternator a sharp tap. The components are new & cheap & after initial contact on the brushes, the springs stick or are held back by the connecting wire & don't apply the pressure to the slip ring.

To answer in short, hit it with a hammer.

Wow that takes me back. I brought my Volvo 343 DLC back with me from Germany , in the late 80s. Got to a stage where just about every 3rd journey required starting with a 'gentle' tap.

That's a proper Landy cure: a brummie spanner.

Just recently fitted a new alternator to my V8. On the outside of the box there was warning that the battery must be fully charged before fitting the alternator. On the supplier's website it repeats this warning stating that failure of a new alternator mainly occurs due to not charging the vehicle battery.

I assume you're back from the sun. Sunny here too, mind. 30 odd degrees outside. Betty Swollocks weather for sure.
Never made it on to the plane, Bloody pneumonia! Will try to get away next week if the antibiotics do their job. Bit uncomfortable out there for the past few weeks, they've had a claima (a dusty mist which holds the temperature in) and it was 43 degrees, good job I stayed home.
