Oft done; stick SIII wings on and leave the SII lamps in the rad panel.
Drawbacks are double the battery drain, and it looks like an SIII
Advantages are, more light, and wider field of coverage (though still not brilliant!)
Switch gear an dold wiring can be a bit 'iffy' and probably not upto double current draw, so second lights probably need to be wired on a new sub-harness, relayed off the original lamp circuits.
Probably worth while 'swapping' the feeds so that the rad panel lights become the 'second' pair, on relays, with an isolator switch, so you can drive on just the wing lamps, and leave the rad lamps turned off, except when really needed on say unlis roads.
A bigger battery wouldalmost certainly be useful, as would a bigger alternator.
If your SII is on an alternator, then recomendation would be to go for an alternator conversion, and possibly the upgrade to a Range rover 90A genny in place of the Lucas 45A or 70A units fitted to the SIII's.
all told, the mod COULD demand a complete rewiring project to convert to alternator, loosing the regulator, and adding extra harnesses for wing lamps, crossong over the rad lamps and wing lamps and adding all the relays and fuses etc.
Its emminantly d0-able, but it depends how badly you'd want it, and how well you'd want to do it as to how reliably it would work.... I mean, you could just slap on SIII wings and wire the lamps in parallel to what you have..... quick and easy, until the lamps start glowing dim, becouse the dynamo isn't making the juice to keep them lit, and the battery has been drained trying........ or the switches melt carrying the load, or the wiring melts and shorts.....
And of course you'd loose that authentic SII 'look'.......
Personally, I'd do the alternator, battery and wiring mods, but my choice would be for a pair of chrome shell motorcycle 'bates' headlamps, providing dip and drive beams, mounted on the bumper, like a pair of 'period' spot-lamps, but working as headlamps.
It would keep the period 'look' and the wings un molested.
The motorcycle beam patern is a bit wider, as motorbikes only have one head-lamps, and they could be angles out a bit to give better corner illumination.
And sat on the bumper, with a curved lense, rather than recessed into the wing, like an SIII lamp, would give a better spread of light.
But its your call, main thing though is making sure you have enough power to keep them lit and the wiring to handle the current draw.

The biggest drawback is that it looks stupid and ruins the look of the SII - which is the best looking landy ever.

I totally agree, and furthermore it would be spoiling the originality of an increasingly rare vehicle. If you want more lights I think it would be better to fit spotlights some spotlights.

Thanks for the advice , the wirings no problem my day job is as an electrician I already have a huge battery on it and an alternator conversion is ongoing but i agree that it would spoil the look of a series 2, will try it as standard first and then if needed fit some spotlights with control relays to save the switches

i saw an advert in a mag for haligon conversion for series land rover that would give better light but maintain style
