Twin Exhaust Backboxes onto a Single Backbox P38

Hi All,

I've done a little bit of searching here but haven't really found the detail I'm after.

My 95/96 P38 (petrol V8) has a totally knackered exhaust that has multiple patches. It's blowing again and I think the rear box is about to fall off!! To make life interesting I only have a couple of weeks to go until the MoT...:rolleyes:

I can get hold of a passable used twin rear-box exhaust cheaper than a new single box one (I know the centre sections are the same), but I'm not clear on how much of a pain fitting actually is. I've replaced several exhausts on other cars in the past, so it's not the "putting an exhaust on the car" bit that worries me...it's the updating aspect.

I've seen references to needing new exhaust hangers for the second back box. Are these available off the shelf or do they need fabricating? Do they get welded to the chassis or bolt on to existing mounting points?

I've also seen reference to re-routing the rear brake pipes that currently run onto the rear axle casing, otherwise they get crushed by the Y-section of the exhaust. As I'll probably have to replace these for the MoT anyway (because of corrosion) that's no issue, but I can't find any pictures or schematics of the post 98 set-up. Do I also need different rear brake flexi-hoses?

Cutting a bit out of the rear bumper doesn't scare me but I know that's probably needed too.

It seems nows the time to change otherwise I'll be wasting money on a new single box system I'd want to take off some time soon anyway to replace with a stainless system; but not if the hassle is too great.

Anyone actually done this before - rather than asked a garage to do it?

I fitted a SS Twin system that I brought from Rimmer Bros, came with all the parts needed to fit, took about 3 hours. Check their web site out, they have various combinations for exhaust systems.

I've had a good look around the Rimmers site but even looking at the components in the various fitting kits doesn't really answer the particular questions I posed above.

Might just have to invest in some more exhaust bandages and exhaust repair goo for now!

Wll after some poking around and looking at a P38 with a twin backbox exhaust I think I can answer my original question (for the record).

You need to weld two new exhaust mounts on to the chassis; one by the towing eye and one just aft of the NSR wheel. You also need a post-97 rear mudflap on the LHS and you need to move the rear brake lines to mimic the post-97 Range Rover set up.

All in all, too much hassle given how soon the MoT is. I was able to get an excellent, complete second-hand single box system for about £80. Went to Classic LSE in Ramsgate for the exhaust and somehow came out with a handful of other bits I needed. Definitely going back as they're really helpful and the prices are very sensible.

Interestingly they work with someone who sprays up some of the interior dash trim to look like wood. This work is really good and you can't see the difference between the painted plastic and the actual veneer.

Job's a good un - fitted the exhaust tonight and it sounds 100 times better!

Brake lines, front calipers and then MoT...

I have a Janspeed system on my early 4,6HSE and just needed the brackets welding on the n/s of the chassis. And the bumper cutting. Looks and sounds perfect...
Catback system with lifetime warranty for £400.
