turns over but no firing

If you have a key fob (central locking) check make sure you unlock the car with that the red light on dash should stay out if it is flashing whilst you try to turn the engine then something is up. If you do not have a key fob or believe it is not working correctly try,

unlocking all doors but keep closed, open bonnet, open drivers window, leave keys in ignition switched off. Disconnect battery (wait 30 seconds or so for everything to power down) reconnect battery (sometimes best to have someone hold bonnet switch closed) and leaning through window try to start the car. if it starts fine immobiliser was on, switch engine off and remove key, press fob unlock 3 times quickly and they should sync up.

Keep me posted

hello matty thank you very much! did exactly what you said and it started 1st time. i don't know how long it will last but it's got me back on the road for now, cheers:D

Glad to hear it! Basically what this operation was doing was fooling the vehicle into thinking the last time the battery was connected it was mobilised rather than immobilised. Glowplugs are an aid and will very very rarely be the issue of non-start i infact start my engine right away without waiting for the glowplugs, which it starts fine everytime and that way doesn't get used to and start needing them.

If this problem persists of course first change the batteries in your handsets (as always go for the easiest/cheapest thing first) if the problem still occurs my bet is on the handsets (if you have 2 does it happen with both fobs?).

I recently bought 2 new, aftermarket key fobs for my 300tdi for just under £100.. very easy to program and actually will come with intructions on how to do so, can dig out the receipt if you want to know where from.

Gimme a holla if you need any help and my bit of advice is dont always jump on the first reply you get when reading forums.. sometimes it can be a costly mistake..

nice one! been driving round today and the little red light has been flashing intermittently, do you think that's anything to do with it? also a high pitch whirring, bit like a dentist drill coming from the engine bay going up and down with the revs. but as soon as you get out and pop the bonnet it;s gone!

Is the light flashing rapidly or like once every 30 seconds or so?

Is it a belt screaming ? They often do this on start up if so try a bit of grease on the belt (make sure engine off when applying the grease hehe) If this stops it ideal if the belt is cracked or the screaming keeps returning change ya belt ! try opening the bonnet then starting engine to catch the noise before it stops maybe..

Haha! yes take your land rover through mud, water and heavy mixtures of the two but grease on the belt and it may blow up!!

Wd would be worse as this will dry very quickly and make it worse although would identify the noise, you wont find a can of "belt dresser" in a garage that has a clue... a finger tip of grease of the belt will be fine, vaseline if you like otherwise known as white soft parrafin.... better yet start checking the alternator first haha

Graphite powder, but only a small puff, works wonders .. ;)

If this small amount of grease causes the belt to slip then the belt if is not tensioned correctly or the belt has had it.. regardless of belt..vehicle...purpose...

the light is flashing quite fast, most of the time every few seconds. the noise is more like a dentist drill whirring not a squeal like slipping belt?

Ok so the light should stay out whilst driving, can you confirm that you do have remote central locking, if so is it a single button for unlock and lock or is there 2 buttons one for each? Also how many handsets do you have?

Ok atleast this rules out the belt, if your not sure a small finger tip of grease (vaseline ideal for this, also as a general tip it is good for stopping corrosion on battery terminals as it has no electrical resistance) eitherside of the belt will be absolutely fine (we are talking about ancillary belt not the timing belt). Now identifying the noise through a basic decription isn't going to cut it, I know you said you haven't been able to catch the noise with the bonnet open but your just gonna have to keep trying! or atleast try to pick out which side of the engine and does it happen more often in any particular circumstance?

2 button fob, given in and took it to the fixers! bypassing the immobiliser, but with it being tamper proof cover on back of pump i'm going nowhere near it. as you say with the noise just keep trying, it doesn't seem to be affecting performance so will keep looking. i'll let you know how it pans out, cheers.

hello, it turns out it was two earths in the dash! the noise was relays going mental! nothing wrong with the immobiliser so it hasn't been bypassed after all and everything is working as it should be. also just flew through the mot with one wheel bearing replaced. all thanks to james hill landrover services in nottingham. today i am a happy bunny!
