turn the key 5 or 6 times

before it starts.
hi guys,has anyone had this fault.after putting the key in I may have to turn the key for 5 or 6 times before it starts.the lights dim on the dash but no starter turn over.once its running its fine.up to now its always started eventually,but im concerned that one time it wont.thanks for any help. j

Have you checked the battery terminals for condition and tightness?

And what sort of vehicle are we talking here?

Sounds like the battery is tired ... when was it replaced last ?

battery terminals seem tight and have tightend the 3 earths by the battery box. thanks. j

Can you hear a click from the starter motor? the solenoid contactors fail, a cheap and easy fix.

If no click from the starter then check the spade connector on the starter motor, they get dirty.

I cant really say,as I have just bought the vehicle.

cant hear a click from the starter,but as I said usually starts after 5 or 6 turns of the key.thanks for the info I will check the starter motor connections in the morning.cheers. j

Also, make sure you have your EKA code and that your key works in the drivers door, they seize up.

Emergency Key Access. see this link. you can read about it in your owners manual.

You may have a similar problem to somebody else on here (sorry can’t remember right now).
When it does it again, move gear shift from “p” and back (if you have an auto) or try start in “N” or ensure you push back to “P” firmly.
Just because battery connections are tight don’t mean they are clean.

Oh check your paperwork you may find a small card with EKA.
If not call your local dealer they can get it for you (free) you will be sure to need it at some point so best get it before you do

thanks Neilly,i don't have the manual or card with the vehicle.i just tried the key in the drivers door.it was a bit stiff but did open it.unfortunately the alarm went off,and with next door having 10 month old twins,i don't think ill be very popular with my neighbours for a while.will try all of the suggestions in the morning. thanks again. j

I would look at.
Battery condition/connection
Solenoid and starter.
You don’t say what spanner’s you have or if you can wield them

thanks,will try all suggestions tomorrow.plenty of spanners,but an even bigger spanner holding them. j
