My disco 200 turbo has some play in the main shaft, about 1/4 to 1/2 a mm, if you get hold of air input fan side. Is this normal? My engines been loosing oil somwhere, whole capacity in about a month, think it was the rear crank seal but am suspicious as theres not much oil on the driveway.

Is my turbo on the way out with this much play, i thought they were ment to have no play at all.

Rich.

I thought the same when I first felt my turbo after taking the inlet air pipes off .. took it out and up to AET Engineering. They said there's nowt wrong with it, it should have on average up to ~0.6mm of lateral movement. Toleranced (IIRC) between 0.2 and 0.9mm of movement, I was gobsmacked!!

It seems they run in an oil 'bearing' film ... and need this, what seems to me to be a lot of movement, to be able to spin freely.

correct, a lot of people ask this thinking their turbo is knackered when its actually fine.
However the turbo oil seals could be failing and causing your oil loss as it will be burning it. Is your intercooler and pipework full of oil? does the inside of your exhaust look oily? If not then the turbo is ok and the problem is elsewhere.

Oily intake manufolds and intercooler. :( Its had to tell the exhaust, just loads of carbon crap. Do u think it would be obvious if the seal was gone? Will the exhaust go blue?

Cheers, Rich.
