good evening.

i may be wrong but i think i have a problem with the turbo. it has been since i changed the cam belt. so i'm guessing i have disturbed something. it seems to wind up and drop off faster than it used to. it is alot louder too and makes a more high pitch whine than it used. it seems to have more power at low revs and less at high revs.

My first feelings are that there is a lack of pressure build up allowing the turbo to spin faster. my other feeling is that it is not receiving oil and is running dry.

It has been like this for a few weeks and hasn't got any worse.

I have never been in another landy so maybe this is what it is suppossed to be like. but it just doesn't sound right imo.

Any ideas? as always any help is very much appreciated.

I would investigate, could just be it's dying.

Friends did this, I took it off the other day and stripped it, you want to see the mess, broken shaft, bearings look like a rat chewed on them. Oil gurgling out of it! It made the noises like you say, his ran on about 5 litres of sump oil before it died, he didn't know he should have stalled it. ALL his coolant was lost.

Check your intercooler hoses just in case you've disturbed them and you have an air leak between the turbo and the intercooler or manifold.
If the turbo is not getting any oil it will frag itself very quickly. The turbo bearing is an "oil film" bearing which relies on high pressure oil so that the turbo shaft can float. No oil = no float = overheat.
Professional race turbos have ball race bearings but are mega expensive.
How many miles has your engine done. I've heard it said that the average turbo is on borrowed time after 80k miles. My first one died at 90k and the replacement lasted 1200 miles due to oil supply problems.

the engine is on 125K ish. it sounds like it is runnuing dry to me. how can i test it? i think i'll probably just take it out and have a look. the list of repairs gets longer on this car, not shorter!!

i checked my hoses and they seem ok to me, mmm. i think it needs checking sooner rather than later though.

Mine has 87000 on the clock, sometimes reading this forum makes me nervous them dam things cost over 500 quid. What can I do to get as long as possible out of the one Iv got, I know about letting the engine return to idle before swiching it off. Have you got any other tips?

I got one for my TD5 for £370 delivered. Genuine Garrett.
Check your oil levels regularly.
Change your oil and filter(s) every 5000 miles. I change mine every 3000.
Let the engine idle for a minute or two before switching off as the turbo can be spinning at nearly 20,000 rpm after a full throttle blast.
Dont worry about it. Things wear out.

Don't know this engine but could it be that the injector pump is driven off the cambelt & possibly needs it's timing tweaked after the new belt has been fitted. Also could the whine be the belt tension?

i'm pretty sure its the trbo as the whine is maybe more of a whizz! it doesn't happen unless the engine is under load and starts a second or 2 after you put your foot down, when you back off it stops.

i checked all the pipes tonight and tweeked some of the routing so the pipes are not as squashed! it goes alot faster now....but is still noisy, but the noise sounds better to me. i think i am worrying about nothing and maybe it is supposed to make this noise! i cheked the oil levels and there are no leaks, but there was traces of oil in the intercooler and pipes. mmmm. i think if the whizzing noise stops then i'll worry

thank for your help

Cheers Shifty I think its been about 6000 since I last did a service so the weekend after next Ill do it all again. I changed the swivel seal (o ring) about 4 months ago and it has not missed a beat since so Im just waiting for the next problem, its sure to come just hope its something cheap and easy.
