Turbo fault and fault finding?

Hello I'm repairing my newly aquired freelander 1 td4, the turbo has gone so I'm on replacing it, with that I've replaced the engine breather,oil filter and air filter. But I've been wondering what would cause a turbo to fail? I've noticed an intercooler pipe that has been sucked in ,I'm not sure if that is why it happened or just caused by the turbo failing?

Could have been lack of oil make sure oil pressure and cleanliness etc is good, did the old one break up if so could pieces be a threat to engine ?

Ok,I'll have a good look, I've bought the landy since the turbo went, I've only noticed the pipe today, I haven't got the turbo off yet to look but I think it's in 1 peice, if not I'll flush it out and change the oil filter again in a week or two.thanks

The dealer I bought mine off let it slip after the sale that He knew it had a replacement turbo on so I wondered with Your post whether it was something common to the TD4s theres plenty of well informed people on here who I'm sure can enlighten you more than me good luck with the refurb.AL

Lack of regular oil changes, or just mileage related.

That normally indicates the compressor isn't spinning. Or one of the boost pipes has collapsed internally.

Hello, I've finally managed to replace the turbo on the freelander, it's running well but it's very smokey, I had it ticking over until the smoke cleared then revved it up and more smoke, I repeated that prosess until it was clear, I've just been up a good 2 hours later and give it a spin round the farm,I've come back and it's still very smokey, that bad I couldn't see to reverse!

What colour is the smoke?
