Hi all,

following on from my various endeavours to trace the missing get-up-n-go in my 1994 disco 1 300tdi, i fitted a pressure gauge reading 0-30 psi. I tee'd it into the pipe going from turbo to injector pump. I used a 0-30 gauge as the target pressure (boost) was around 12psi which is at the most accurate mid-scale point of the gauge.

Anyway, we took her for a spin with wifey holding the gauge shouting out numbers as i thrashed (or attempted to) the nuts off of her, warmed up, then uphill as full throttle as i could get.

The maximum boost i got was 2 psi :eek::eek: so if i did the test correctly, this would indicate why she is as flat as a pancake to drive, lifeless is an exaggeration here.

So the question is, WHERE HAS ALL MY PRESSURE GONE????

It makes the right whistle noise as you rev but there is bugger all pressure output.

ANY thoughts would be much appreciated.

Split hoses, split intercooler etc etc

Hoses are all ok, this measurment was taken at the turbo output point. The pipes from turbo to plenum inc the I/C have all been cleaned and checked, I/C is clear.

Cant see or hear any leaks.

There is only a little black smoke when starting from cold.

Just got off the phone with a mechanic, apparently all the turbo's that he has seen would spin very freely if the rotor is flicked by hand.

My one is physically quite stiff and although it can be turned, it most definately would not spin.

Sound like a partially seized turbo??????

Yup.

Turbo spins very freely, in fact can feel loose ... clearance up to about 0.25mm ... ;)

As it's stiff you have three options.

1. Buy new, expensive
2. Buy exchange reconditioned, probably best option and reasonably cost efective.
3. I'd try, as it's nackered, stripping it and re-working it myself. If it still doesn't work, go to 2. ... ;)

I have used AET Turbos are the recognised turbocharger specialists in all turbo supply, new, re-manufacture, repair and re-design, we aim to exceed your needs. and found them very knowledgable and helpful, though probably not the cheapest!

that don't sound good if it breaks up the **** really could hit the fan!! (and take some of your engine with it)

Yes, that and the fact that driving a normally aspirated 300 tdi disco is like driving a series 3 diesel when it should be a little more sprightly.

There was no smoke because there was no extra boost-fuel to burn as the injector was not getting any boost pressure signal, so it was the same as taking the turbo right off practically.
